"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 30, 1997 - 9 Scugog business now on the 'Net with Chamber site By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Many businesses in Port Perry and the rest of Scugog Township now have visitors from around the globe, thanks to two local organizations. Working together to pro- mote Scugog and its busi- nesses, the local Chamber of Commerce and the Scugog Memorial Public Library have teamed up to make it possible to advertise area merchants world-wide via computer. While the Scugog Chamber of Commerce has been linked to the Internet for over a year now, it recently established its own site, says Chamber director JoAnne Cerovich. The Chamber has been on-line now for a year, but has been under a sub-direc- tory of a current member, she said. When the library introduced a home page for Scugog -- Scugog-Net -- last June, the Chamber estab- lished its presence on the Internet. "For the last three weeks the Scugog Chamber of Commerce has had-its own page through Scugog-Net. We now exist on the World Wide Web," she said. The library contacted the local merchants seeking information on who was already on-line, and who wanted to be. The next step was taken by the Chamber when it made arrangements tobecome linked with Scugog- Net, yet have its own home page. "Scugog-Net is a highway for the businesses in the town- ship. It allows all the busi- nesses in the area who want to advertise on our page the opportunity to do so," said Ms Cerovich. There is no cost for the merchants to have their busi- ness promoted on the page, but if they want their own home page, the Chamber can point them in the right direc- tion to get one, she said. The page shows the user the Chamber's logo and mis- sion statement and objec- tives, as well as president Craig Taylor's message. Information entered on the page will be updated periodi- cally, in an effort to keep the site up to date. Joanne Cerovich checks in on the Scugog Chamber of Commerce's new web site. It's been established to send news of Scugog and its businesses around the globe, in hopes of increasing tourism and opportunities. It includes news of events and attractions, and information on local businesses. "We are trying to allow people to know as much as we can about the township; inside and out," said Ms Cerovich. "We recently put all the businesses on the site that wanted to be and we also put on area events that people want advertised. She said "hits" -- browsers visiting the site -- will be monitored, with new entries and developments put in place within 24 hours. The Internet link has been established in order to give Scugog businesses a boost, said Ms Cerovich. -"Scugog-Net has been reg- istered with all the search engines and now everyone around the world can take a look at it," she said. "Browsers can check out the area and make plans for a visit. Everyone is using this source to advertise; it's not a new invention. This way is much more prevalent, and it gets the message out." "1 TRUST MY MECHANIC TO KEEP ME ON THE ROAD." "I don't know a lot about cars. How could anyone who doesn't work on them everyday? That's why I like my mechanic. He knows my car inside and out.
