Early cold spell has farmers here worried By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A recent drop in the mercury has area farmers worried. After temperatures hovered around the freezing mark last Tuesday (Sept. 23), evening, Neil Moore, a specialist with the local OMAFRA office, says this could be a rough year for crops. "With the recent development of near frost conditions over the past 10 days most of the farmers I've talked to have become a little worried," he said. Most of the fields are coming along fine right now, but temperatures have fallen to zero and even a degree below; that's getting close to the temperature where frost can kill, said Mr. Moore. Farmers had been hoping for rela- tively warm temperatures in September to make up for an awful spring and slow growth throughout the summer. But heat is starting to escape quickly, and some of the crops are starting to show some frost symptoms. Mr. Moore explained that the weather would have to warm up and stay that way for almost another month for all the local crops to remain safe. The problem with waiting for crops to be ready by mid-October, is that killing frost is due in the very near future. "When temperatures drop to minus two or lower, that's what we classify as killing frost. We'd like for it to hold off until around Oct. 15, but, unfortunately, it starts showing up around Oct. 5," said Mr. Moore. "If we have to wait until the middle of October then we could be in for trou- ble." The summer of 1997 has been a very confusing one for farmers. April was promising, but they encountered cold temperatures and rain in May. After planting in late May, there was a three- week drought which hurt germination. When things got back under way near the end of June, farmers faced below- normal heat in July and August. "We were then hoping September would have been our saviour month, but it may not happen," said Mr. Moore. on Chex TV EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT 7:00PM - 7:30PM 1 game full card 6 up for $3.50 Minimum Pay Out $3,000 Cards Sold Here.
