20- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 30, 1997 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" PORT PERRY STAR ORTS CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR REACHING FOR IT: Port Perry MoJacks starting netminder Derek Spence gives it his all as he reaches for a shot during Sunday's home opener against the Georgina Ice. While being blitzed for four goals in the first period, the home squad rallied late in the third to score a goal with just over one minute remaining to gain a 6-6 tie. The squad now posts a 1-0-1 record. MoJacks score late in the third to preserve tie ModJacks use late rally to tie Ice in '97 home opener The Port Perry MoJacks opened the 1997- 98 Junior C hockey season better than they closed their previous campaign. After losing their last handful of games in the 1996-97 season to fall out of the playoff hunt, the local squad opened the new season on a winning note when they travelled to Keswick and beat the hometown Georgina Ice 5-3 in regular season play. The MoJacks then returned to Port where they played the second half of their home- and-home series with the lee on Sunday (Sept. 28) afternoon. After a special ceremony to introduce the "Port team -- and the traditionally puck-drop- ping ceremony by sponsor Dave Jackson of Mother Jackson's Open Kitchens -- the ModJacks played their first home game of season. Georgina opened the scoring early in the first when Jim White flipped a shot past starting MoJack goaltender Derek Spence. Port responded shortly after that when . Barry Forth let a blast go from the blue line that hit Ice netminder Travis Filby on his trapper and flew up in the air. While the opposing goalie searched for puck, it landed behind him and dribbled across the goal line. Forth's goal with 8:40 left in the first was assisted by Mike Heasman. The tie was shortlived however, as the Ice took the lead 31 seconds later ona play which seen Spence committ himself too early. The MoJacks goaltender dropped to his knees just before the Ice player roofed the puck onto an empty net. Before the period was out the Ice scored twice more to take a 4-1 lead, and it looked like a blowout was on the way. While the game appeared out of reach, the local squad fought back over the remaining two periods to force a tie with Georgina. With just over a minute left to play in the third the MoJacks scored to knot the game at 6-6. A special presentation was held during the first intermission to honor the two local Bantam teams who finished first and third respectively in the Ontario Hockey Federation playoffs last spring.
