And further revisions are planned for the next school year as public and separate schools work toward full integration on buses, said Mrs. Drew. The busing changes, introduced this fall, have been the target of criticism from some parents. They've resulted in earlier pick-up times for some kids, and there were a few problems at the outset that have been addressed by the board. Mrs. Drew said parents, many of whom have had to change their schedules to accommodate the new bus times, want to know if sav- ings are being realized. "They want to know if it's worth it, and I'm sug- gesting it is," she said. At a board meeting last week trustees were given a report which shows there will be region-wide savings of $1,056,000 over the course of the school year as a result of the changes, which have reduced the number of buses hired by the Durham board by 33. that's less than the $1.3 million savings hoped for, but officials say increased enrollment meant not as many buses could be taken off the road as had been hoped for. In Scugog Township the savings amount of $160,000, said Mrs. Drew. The board approved a rec- ommendation that any sav- ings realized through the transportation revisions will go to school "block bud- gets", paying for supplies and equipment. Block budgets at indi- vidual schools will rise between 7 and 8 per cent next year as a result of the initiative, said Mrs. Drew. In the works now is an agreement between the public and separate boards in Durham to take the next logical step, and have their students share buses on common routes. "Next year there will be total integration of public school and separate school students on buses," said Mrs. Drew. "There will be savings, but it's too early to tell how much." She added that while there were some com- plaints about the new bus times early in the year -- the majority came from parents in Uxbridge and Scugog -- they have been fewer as revisions are introduced. -- |DRUGStore -- PHARMACY HealthWise CLINIC Please join us at our upcoming Clinic on DIABETES Thursday, October 16th from 2 p.m.to 7 p.m. Reids Independent - 1893 Scugog Street Port Perry - (905) 985-3308 If you wish to make an appointment, please stop by the Pharmacy or call in advance. athe Dn *Free liver " 1 a y .
