MAYOR: Incumbent Howard Hall is seeking another term in the may- or's chair. He is facing oppo- sition from two candidates -current Ward 1 rep Doug Moffatt, and former Scugog councillor John Wolters. Hall is a life-long resi- dent of Port Perry and has been active in community affairs as well his several terms as mayor and ward councillor. Moffatt was first elected to the Ward 1 seat in 1994. He's originally from the Pickering area, was at one time a school principal and worked as an executive for a parcel post company, and as executive director for the courier services associ- ation in Canada. He served a term as Liberal MPP at Queens Park in the 1970's. Wolters has lived in Scugog for over 40 years where he owned and oper- ated a dairy and beef farm near Blackstock. MUSTANG "ICE RIDER" REGIONAL SEAT: There are four candidates in the race for the lone Scugog seat on the Durham Region council as incum- bent and veteran councillor Marilyn Pearce is hanging up her political boots. Ken Gadsden is the current Ward 3 rep on council and completing his second term in this posi- tion. A resident of the Island, he has lived in Scugog for about eight years and is a retired man- ager with Bell Canada. He's currently chair of the Township finance commit- tee. Colin Kemp is a Nestleton resident and self-employed business consultant who has been active in the local taxpay- ers coalition and the fight to keep garbage dumps out of Scugog. He has strong views and no fear of expressing them. He feels that Durham Region should be scrapped, wants tight fiscal policy and a user pay system for such things as recreation. Glenn Malcolm served a term as the Ward 4 rep several years ago. He lived most of his life in Ward 4 where he farmed. He recently entered the Christian ministry. In 1991, he came within 100 votes of winning the may- or's chair in a race against Howard Hall, and in 1994 ran for the Regional council seat. His father Lawrence was the first Mayor of Scugog. Don Kett filed nomina- tion papers last Friday. A resident of the Island (he lives just a couple of doors from Gadsden). He has two grown children. WARD 1: This will be a hotly contested seat with four candidates in the race to replace Moffatt who is running for Mayor. Dave Robinson, a Seagrave res- ident teaches at Port Perry High School, and has been active as Liberal in federal and provincial politics. He's a past president of the local Kinsmen club and former president of the Canadian Kinsmen. Barry Johnston has lived in Scugog for about 20 years and this is his sec- ond attempt at election to the Ward 1 seat. He is employed as a financial analyst and operates a bicycle repair business as well. He and his wife Jean have five sons. Allan Bailey, 56, is a life-long resident of the Marsh Hill area. In fact, he's a third generation res- ident. He owns and oper- ates an organic farm and raises Charlois beef cattle. This is his first run at elect- ed politics and believes there is a need for farm representation on council. He also deplores the condi- tion of roads in rural areas and is opposed to garbage pick-up in rural Ward 1. Keith Bacon filed nomination papers on Friday. He's a life-long res- ident of Scugog who owns and operates a cash crop farm on Cragg Road west of Greenbank. This is his first try at elected office. He's a mem- ber of both Port Perry and Uxbridge Fair Boards, and the Ontario Crop and Soil Improvement Association. His main reason for run- ning in 1997 is the concern that Scugog will end up part of the Greater Toronto Area--which he strongly opposes. He and his wife Carol have four children. WARD 2: A current councillor and former coun- cillor are facing each other for the seat in this ward. Ken Carruthers (incum- bent) is completing his sec- ond term on council as he was first elected in Ward 1. Defeated in 1994, he won 'the Ward 2 by-election mid- way through the current term. Carruthers is a for- mer president of the Chamber of Commerce, and at one time owned the Country Style Donut shop in Port Perry. He is being challenged by Richard Drew, a 30- year resident of Scugog who held a seat on council several years ago. He too has a background with the Chamber of Commerce, operated his own business, and now works for a local company. His wife Bobbie is seeking re-election as the public school trustee. WARD 3: What a change from three years ago, when Ken Gadsden took the Island seat by acclamation. With Gadsden seeking the Regional seat, there are four candidates in the race. Jeff Brown, who works for a local company, is mak- ing his second try at elec- tion to council as he ran in the Ward 2 by-election mid- way through this term. Brown has taken an active interest in local affairs and has been a regular observer at council meetings for the past couple of years. He's also the public address voice at Junior C hockey games. Wendy Davis is run- ning for office for the first time. She operated busi- nesses in Port Perry and worked with the local Chamber of Commerce. Jim McMillen is in his first election campaign. He's self employed with his own tree service busi- ness, and served as a mem- ber and president of the Scugog Arena Board. Nick Paladino oper- ates a paint and wall-paper store in Port Perry, and has been active with the local BIA and Chamber of Commerce. This is his first attempt at elected office in Scugog Township. WARD 4: Like Ward 2, this is a two-person race between incumbent Joyce Kelly of Blackstock and former ward rep Dave Dietlein of Nestleton. Kelly is completing her first term on council and is a former member of the Durham Public School Board. She has been active- ly involved in numerous community organizations Dietlein, who is self- employed, served a term as the Ward 4 rep but did not seek re-election in 1994 due to health reasons. He's an advocate of strong local government and keeping a lid on spending. His health problems have been over- come and he's been an observer at council meet- ings for the last several months. WARD 5: Incumbent Karen Puckrin has decided not to seek re-election and there are two hopefuls in the race for this seat. Garry Mahony is a long time resident of Scugog and a self-employed contractor. He has been a regular observer at council meetings for the last couple of years. . Frank Twilt has lived at Honey's Beach for the last year and had a sum- mer home in the township for the last eight years. He works in Scarborough as general manager for Thyssen Elevator with 240 employees and wants to see the Township run more as a business. This is his first attempt at election to local office.
