Snobelen out as minister From page 1 er Dave Johnson to the education ministry. In a move some teachers see as an attempt by the Tories to avert a threatened walk- out by 126,000 Ontario educators, Mr. Johnson has told media he's willing to talk about the govern- ment's contentious Bill 160. Bill 160, which would see 4,400 teaching posi- tions wiped out and prep time for high school teach- ers cut, has been deemed unacceptable by the province's teaching associ- ations. The government has said the bill is neces- sary to streamline costs in education. It's resulted in a pro- tracted stand-off that has led to a very real threat of an illegal strike by teach- ers, many of whom have been offended by Mr. Snobelen's style. Local teaching associa- tion reps were reluctant to comment on the chances of a mediated settlement to the issues in Bill 160 until after a meeting yes- terday between teacher association heads to map out their position on the bill. They expect to meet with the new education minister soon. But for now, no walkouts are planned by Ontario teachers in the immediate future.
