"A Family rradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 15, 1997 - 25 SrorTs FIRST PLACE: More than 50 players came out recently when the Scugog Shuffle Board Club held it's annual tournament.The top four winners at the seventh annual competition were, clockwise from back left, Bet Pitts, third; Leo Leger, fourth; Bruce ~ Mitchell, second; and Larry Spires finished first. Port beats Uxbridge in opener The Port Perry Midget one team sponsored by Pineridge Sports opened their season on Oct. 2 against Uxbridge at the Scugog Arena. Port got off to a sluggish start as Uxbridge jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first period. In the second Port got on track as they scored the next six goals to take a commanding 6-3 lead at the end of the second period. Tyler Wotton led the charge as he scored three goals and picked up one assist. Mike Hamilton chipped in with two goals on the evening and three assists, with Dan Lyons and Shawn Hnatko rounding out the scoring. Also picking up assists were Tom Keeble with two, Ryan McQuade, Danny Lyons, Jon Froats and Shawn Hnatko. In the third Uxbridge rallied with two goals but Mike Hamilton's empty netter secured this 7-6 win. Ryan Fraser drew the assignment between the pipes and made some fine saves to Local Midgets open season with 7-5 win preserve the win. Up next for these Pineridge Sports Midgets was a late night trek down the 401 to Napanee. Port came into this game shorthanded as five players were side- lined for various reasons. Napanee took advantage of this shortfall as they jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two periods. Port got one back early in the third as Tyler Wotton scored assisted by Ryan McQuade and Mike Hamilton. Napanee increased their lead to 6- 1 before Danny Lyons assisted by Adam Hobbs made the final score 6-2 for Napanee. Paul Brownson played a solid game in net for Port despite the outé¢ome. The Pineridge Sports Midget one team will be coached this year by Steve Thompson, Harvey Williams, Dave Jamieson, Ed Hobbs and Eric Donnelly. With the support of everyone I'm sure everybody will have lots of fun and see some good hockey. Aces fold against the Clippers From Page 24 the defeat. Jim Duncan opened the scoring for the Clippers on a nice backhand to the top corner assisted by the Clippers goalie Bob Strickert. Then John Harman took over for the Clippers scoring two goals. His first was assisted by Richie LeFort and Rick Hope on a nice, low snapshot to the corner of the net. His second was assisted by Brad Meekin and Richie LeFort. In the second period the Sharks tried to make a comeback when Duane Bronson scored with helpers going to Bob Beacock and Rick Campbell. But the Clippers responded when Brad Meekin found the back of the net after being set up in the slot by John Harman and the other assist went to Richie LeFort. _- The Sharks tried to tie it near the end of the game as Jay Adam scored after taking a pass from Rick Campbell but the Clippers played strong defen- sively. Taylor Fuels Aces 5 Pizza Delight Roosters 1 This game was dominated by the Aces as they picked up the 5-1 victory. The Aces attacked early as they scored five straight goals to jump out to a 5- 0 lead. Scoring for the Aces were Karl Durham with two goals, his first on a nice snapshot through the five-hole of the Roosters goalie assisted by Jarett Harman and Ken Davison, his second goal was also assisted by Jarett Harman and Ken Davison, Wayne Hancock from Karl Durham and Jarett Harman, Ken Little with helpers going to Ivan Geer and Jarett Harman, and Jarett Harman who had five points in this game closed out the scoring for the Aces assisted by Karl Durham and Wayne Hancock. The only scorer for the Roosters was Jason Warner and he was assisted by Tom Warner and Bruce Smith. J&D Carpentry Hawks 3 Monsma Electric Chargers 3 In this hard fought game the Hawks and the Chargers played to a 3-3 draw. The Chargers opened up the scoring when Willie Edwards found the net with helpers going to Steve Connors and Jack Monsma. The Hawks then came back with two straight goals to grab the lead. Dave Milton scored the first goal for the Hawks after taking a pass from Scott Herd. The Hawks second goal was scored by Greg Fitzgerald assisted by Rick Sakanashi. The Hawks lead did not last long as the Chargers scored two goals to take the lead back. Mike McQuade tied the game with 15 sec- onds left in the second period and he was assisted by Dean Smith and Steve Connors. Dean Smith then gave the Chargers the lead after taking passes from Bob Collins and Rick Olaisen. The Hawks did not give up though as they tied it up when Dave Milton found the net after being set up by Bob Coppins and Dave Burnett. Pizza Delight Roosters 5 Ball/Callery Senators 1 Dave Dickson opened up this Sunday to lead the Roosters in a 5-1 mauling of the Senators. Also scoring for the Roosters were Mike Driscoll, Ed Olsen, and Carl Fitzgerald. With assists going to Jason Warnegy (two), Tom Warner, Dave Dickson, George Gladish and Bruce Smith. Jeremy Norton got the Senators on the board from Bill Van Camp. Pineridge Sports Wolves 1 J&D Carpentry Hawks 4 Dave Burnett opened up the scoring in this one from Greg Fitzgerald and Sean Fewer. However, the Wolves answered right back with Ken Smart scoring from Jamie Menzies. But in the third period Dave Burnett scored numbers two, three and four. Assists on those three went to Greg Fitzgerald, Brad Coppins and Dave Milton. Harrison Fuels Flames 1 - Monsma Electric Chargers 5 It was Harrison Fuels who drew first blood in this one. It was Mark DeCosta with helpers from Brian Stevenson and Steve Groves. Despite the first quick goal, the Chargers scored five of.their own from Jeff Card, Henry Forderer, Dean Smith, Willie Edwards and Mike McQuade with assists awarded to Jack Monsma (two), Steve Connors, Rick Olaisen, Bob Collins, Mike McQuade, Jeff Card and Willie Edwards. Compton Cable Comets 5 Van & Truck World Sharks 3 This was a relatively close game compared to the other games this morning. Duane Bronson started it off for the Sharks from Wayne Fox and Mike Adam. Ron Compton then returned the favor from Bill Foote and John Mackey. Then the Sharks Wayne Fox from Rick Campbell. The Comets then added three more in the second period to take a 4-2 lead. They were scored by John Mackey, Bill Foote, and Greg Warriner. Assists from Bill Foote, Ron Compton, Greg Warriner and Ray Zaparanuik. The Sharks then scored their third from Rick Campbell and assists to Wayne Fox and Bob Beacock. Greg Warriner then scored his second of the game for the Comets to put this one out of reach. Cedar Creek Con. Clippers 6 Taylor Fuels Aces 1 2:31 was all it took for the Clippers to grab a 2-0 lead in this one. They were scored by John Harman with assists to Brad Meekin and Derek Fitzgerald. The Aces then scored their single goal by Jarett Harman from Ken Davison. Not short- ly after the Clippers scored four more. The goalscorers were John Harman, Jim Duncan, Rick Hope and Colin Asselstine. The assists were given to John Harman (two), Jim Duncan, Steve Dunn, Derek Fitzgerald, Richie LeFort and Colin Asselstine. Port Metals beat Cottrell's 3-0 Metals put bite on Cuspids For most of this excit- ame between ing Cottrell's Cuspids and Port Perry Metals' goals "were scarce but goaltend- ing was at a premium. Cottrell's Trevor Leach was outstanding and P.P. Metals' Sam Bennett was even better as he recorded the shutout, Sean Murray finally 'solved Trevor late inthe second period with an Mitch Sauder and Brad assist going to Stuart Medford. Sam the man stopped Mike Jehu on consecutive breakaways holding the score at 1-0. Layzell iced the game with unassisted third period goals. The final in this nailbiter was 3-0 for Port Perry Metals.
