Teachers fear school closures From page 1 and the community -- 1s key here," said Jerry Fis, principal for both the Epsom and Greenbank public schools. "Everyone is active and while this is not a large school, we have - high academic achievement and a full range of activities for everyone to enjoy. "The community needs this school." Parents and students also fear the closure of Cartwright High School in Blackstock. "Sure, I think Cartwright will be shut down, and there's nothing anyone will be able to do about it," says Sandra Ogden, a Blackstock resi- dent who teaches in Whitby. "Look at the cutbacks 'that they are forcing upon us and tell me that they're not going to shut down a small school like this. As a teacher, I don't want them to shut it down, and as a parent I don't want them to shut it down." Teacher John Bierness says he wants to know where the students will be sent if the tiny high school is shut down. "I'm extremely upset over this whole thing. If they close us up, where are they going to put the kids?" said the CHS music and history teach- er. "This school is ahead of most of the other sec- ondary schools in the region," he added. "We have Port Perry kids, even Burketon kids, com- ing here... Everyone is in support of the school because it is so important to the community." Cartwright High School opened in 1925 and employs 11 teachers and one principal to edu- cate 150 students. While it is believed by many that that the school could be closed, Durham- East MPP John O'Toole stated in an Oct. 15 letter to Blackstock's Fred Ford that he's not aware of any forthcoming actions to close CHS. In his response to a let- ter that ran in the Oct. 8 edition of The Port Perry Star, Mr. O'Toole writes: "I know and support this fine institution of Cartwright High School. Bill 160 is all about giving every student in Ontario the privilege of the most accessible, accountable and highest- -quality edu- cation possible. "In speaking with (Durham Education) officials, it has been confirmed to me that there is no plan by the Board to close Cartwright High School." The letter comes one week after the MPP told The Star that "the school functions very well and is very well supported, but I can't make any promises that it won't close down. The board has some very serious deci- sions to make." a LS) Applicants must: Township of Scugog FIRE DEPARTMENT requires VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS Volunteer firefighters are required for Station 1 (Port Perry) and Station 2 (Caesarea) Persons from Prince Albert, Blackstock and Nestleton areas are welcome to apply. - be at least 18 years of age - possess a current valid Ontario driver's permit - be able to successfully complete both written and physical testing as required by the dept.
