McClelland Port Perry Star Better get those skates sharpened: it looks like the Ice Palace will be back on Lake Scugog again this winter, thanks in part to some financial help from the township. Council agreed unani- mously Monday afternoon -- the last meeting before the election next week -- to provide the palace with $2,500 in "bridge financ- ing" to buy snow fencing and to make the enclosed v- SERIES i & & 90 2 ¥ wa ae YRS ~ 3g [EI SS 8. 1998 > oo 4 194 < L R14 I'l T Foro T° shelter better protected against vandalism. The township money, coupled with $1,500 from the Chamber of Commerce and downtown BIA, will provide the $4,000 needed to buy the fencing and do the upgrading to the shel- ter, said Ice Palace rep David Goldberg. Noting that the Ice Palace is a tremendous asset for the community in attracting visitors and providing family recre- ation for local residents, council was quick to endorse the request for the $2,500 which will be re-paid to the Scugog trea- sury from profits this year or in future years. However, both Mayor Howard Hall and Ward 2 rep Ken Carruthers were critical of the level of finan- cial support given by the Chamber of Commerce and BIA who will provide $500 and $1,000 respectively. "The Ice Palace is one the best things we do in this community, and I'm FOR ITS 50th BIRTHDAY WE GAVE IT IAEA Ja Ri lel] lal] NITciRd-F- 30 0 JJ IT 2 "4 Rh § Lig lelel VI JN Sy 3h i JU ee Air Conditioning The Most Powerful Standard Engine In Its Class Automatic Transmission 1998 F-SERIES XLT-THE COMPLETE TRUCK Power Locks/ Windows/Mirrors Ere BR Polishe Aluminum Wheels Speed Control/ Tilt Steering AM/FM 50th Birthday Special Edition Jacket* With the purchase of any new F-Series 4X Retail Value $225 Lower Two-Tone disappointed the chamber and BIA aren't better sup- porting it financially," said the mayor. His criticism was followed in kind by words from Carruthers. Mr. Goldberg pointed out the BIA is putting in $1,500, but $500 of that must be spent on adver- tising for the Ice Palace, leaving $1,000 to cover the capital costs for fencing. He said that Settlement House Stores will con- tribute $500 towards get- ting the Ice Palace up and running this winter. The Ice Palace is a large open air skating rink on the lake in front of the Port Perry waterfront. Car wash plan held up Scugog councillors want Ken Irvine to provide sound testing before he goes ahead with an automatic car wash at his gas bar and variety store at the intersection of Queen St. and Hwy. 7A, in west end Port Perry. By having a profes- sional sound engineer test for noise levels ahead of time, coun- cillors said Monday, the applicant will know what measures will be required to muffle the noise so there is no adverse impact on a home about 50 feet to the east. : ~ Mr. Irvine agreed to the request, but he was less than pleased. He had hoped council would give him approval for the car wash yesterday. - A public meeting into the application was held two weeks ago. Neighbors to the east raised concerns about how much noise the car wash dryers would generate. Regional councillor Marilyn Pearce noted that under the bylaw there should be 12 metres buffer between the car wash and a res- idential property.
