It's been a long campaign, during which there has been much dialogue about the future of Scugog Township, the direction in which the municipality will go, and what outside forces and pres- sures will guide us. It is in that respect that this has been a campaign unlike any other; the people of Scugog have been asked to vote for a council that could, during the course of its mandate, see local government radi- cally restructured. Some wonder if Scugog as we know it will even exist in three years. So it is that we must thank those who have taken up the challenge of serving on council during what could be turbulent times, and wish them the best of luck. And we have to remember those who were unsuccessful in their bids for office, [4 2 PorT Perry STAR because without opposition, there is no true exploration of ideas and platforms. Democracy suffers -- it ceases to exist -- without opposition. For the rest of us, our duty does not come to an end with yesterday's vote. Local government is an every day, all- encompassing system which must be observed and guarded. Open government will only exist if there are those who would question; par- ticipatory government only works if there is participation. So, Mr. Mayor and Councillors, here's wishing you all the best. It will be an interesting three years, to say the least. Letter Week To The Editor: The news story about the auction and sale of Lt. Col. John McCrae's WWI medals passed far too quickly, perhaps because of the per- ceived happy ending. There are a number of issues that went untouched. When I called the heritage minister Sheila Copps' office to tell them I was not opposed to them spending my tax dollars on the McCrae medals, I was told they would do what they could, and assured me the medals could not leave the country. Thedora Harri Ts ase son, beside her Ford Coupe, was one of the first women chiropractors in Canada. Her first practice was established in Port Perry in 1923, and she later practiced in Toronto and Mt. Albert. She died in 1995 at age 96 and is buried in the Mt. Albert cemetery. A lone gunman robbed the Brewers Retail. 10 YEARS AGO Tuesday, November 10, 1987 Cliff and Helen Redman's barn, a Scugog Island landmark for more than half a century, was destroyed by fire on Wed., Nov. 4. Scugog Choral Society presented "Off Broadway" performing musical selections from "Evita; Phantom of the Opera; Jesus Christ Superstar and Cats." Dorothy Nelson was presented with a 15 year service certificate from the Canadian Cancer Society. Louise Hartney won the YWCA Women of Distinction award for community service. Leigh-Ann Goreski and Christina McLean were Valedictorians at the annual P.PH.S. and Cartwright H.S Commencement exercises.
