Enjoy our famous temporary name of Kast Durham Hospital Corporation, with an operating budget of roughly $150 million. Ajax-Pickering General Hospital will merge with Scarborough's Centenary Hospital, and Whitby General Hospital will close its doors per- manently on March 31, 1998, the HSRC stated. Mr. Kirvan has expressed satisfaction with the recent report, although a full announce- ment on NDHS will come in the following months. "The Commission has shown a strong commit- ment to rural services and from that message I have to be agreeable with the restructuring commis- sion," he said last week. The merger, he says, will make each hospital better: "With everyone joining together it will make the NDHS a stronger, more viable. North Durham will merge with the south and a strong rural voice will be heard. There's no ques- tion about it, this merger will make us stronger." The announcement of the merger comes just over eight months after Port Perry's Community Memorial and Uxbridge's Cottage hospitals merged and became known as the North Durham Health Services on April 1. The merger was designed to increase the efficiency of both facilities and increase their chances of surviving cuts made by the provincial commission. When asked if he thought that more than 18 months of work on the Port-Uxbridge merger was wasted with the rec- ommendation of yet another merger, Mr. Kirvan quickly said no. "Absolutely not. Both sites merged to become more efficient, and to have a stronger voice for rural health care," he said. "Now that we are going to amalgamate with the other hospitals, it will be North Durham merging, not two smaller sites. We have built an alliance, and with that we will be stronger than two inde- pendent sites." One question that will loom over his head, how- ever, is if he will still have a job at this time next year. "There's going to have to be a process and there's going to have to be talk about the governance. It depends on their vision of how things will work," he said. Before moving to Durham, Mr. Kirvan was a CEO at a Walkerton area hospital but a merger there with three other hospitals, forced him out of the loop. Similarly, the heads of both Uxbridge and Port Perry hospitals left when the amalgama- tion occurred here. "We're going to have to wait and see what the new governance feels," Mr. Kirvan said. The question about my future can't be answered." While the GTA/905 announcement was made in mid-November, Mr. Kirvan says that the exact changes for Scugog and Uxbridge won't be known until maybe as late as next April. "There's been no hints of any major changes here," he said. "We will be open and we will have the same services."
