Deadline Dec. 14/97 go Cheque centre set up during postal strike A cheque distribution centre has been set up in South Oshawa during the "postal strike for those who receive some government assistance cheques. Gary Hillier, a commu- nity liaison officer for Human Resource Development Canada, says that a temporary office and toll-free phone numbers have been set up to aid those during the time of the strike. "We have set up a Stonemoor Day Care Centres Inc. 399 Queen Street, Port Perry 985-0800 Limited Openings in all age groups. gionemooyr Available - Short or Long Term | Nd are @en\tt od eb ) "OIE ae fl 8 ne pe 6:00pm pr ok » » J ; LPIZAN yr QUINN ayaa 985-0800 cheque distribution centre for those who receive Employment Insurance (EI) and those who are in Employment Trainee (EP) programs," he said last Thursday. "The people who receive those benefits are depen- dent on filling out a bi- weekly report card on what they're doing and where they're at. They then mail that in and then a cheque 1s printed and sent back to them, but obviously that can't happen with the strike." Instead, he says, start- ing Nov. 24, people can either fill out a card and drop it off at the new centre or call either an english of french toll-free number to report their status. Cheques will also be avail- able for pick-up at the cen- tre, he adds. "Everyone in Durham Region, with the exception of Brock because they go to Peterborough, can come to us if they want. Both the EI and ET recipients have to fill out a form to get their money and we just want to make sure they get it during this postal strike." Mr. Hillier says that as of Nov. 8 there were 9,459 claimants in the region, although some may work off and on. "Some are unemployed 'and others work two weeks or so and then are of again. | It's broken down into two week cycles. Before the strike, recipients use to send in their forms every other Friday, so we deal with up to 4,800 claimants a week," he said, adding that 13 people will be staffing the centre. Anyone interested in dropping their cards off at the centre can stop in at the Lake Vista Park Clubhouse, at 450 Emerald Ave. in Oshawa; at the corner of Cedar and Emerald, north of the Philip Murray between Simcoe and Park, south of the 401. < IF FURNITURE * APPLIANCES ¢ TV & VCR By Ball i by bali Camis O85. 245] UNITED [|v fz Y | CARPET® BLINDS
