He's one of a number of residents who have been.angered by the promotion, which promises big cash prizes but can guar- antee only a hefty phone bill for those who try to claim winnings by calling a 1-900 number. If three identical figures are found, you are con- sidered a winner, they say. The Calgary-based company Cave Promotions Inc. advises winners to call the Prize Claim Line at 1-900-451- 4646 (HOHO), for prize claim instructions. The card also states that callers must be 18 years or older and that each caller 1s a winner, which Mr. Domik con- siders a falsehood. "I can't believe these people are doing this. It's so near Christmas so they're playing on every- one's generosity and peo- ple's emotions. This is the first time I've received a scam ticket in my mailbox, and I can't believe Canada Post is delivering them." Also voicing concerns over the tickets was Kay Langmuir, who says she doesn't understand why the cards continue to be sent out across Canada. A Fabulous Sale! A similar promotion last year led to a police investigation. "It's a scam and they investigated it, and they are still doing it," she said. Meanwhile, Durham Regional Police say there is nothing they can do about the tickets. "Yes, we're getting some calls and people should just be aware that they should read the tick- et carefully and know that charges will be incurred if they call the number," said Detective' Ken Anderson of the Major Fraud Unit. "From our experiences we know that most of the time the guaranteed prizes people are promised if they call the number are not worth the $19.95 they use when they call." Reports of the cards have come in from Scugog, Oshawa and Bowmanville, he said. "It's really just a pro- motion. A criminal inves- tigation has shown that the company is not really doing anything criminal- ly wrong, but some do get close to the line." PORT PERRY FEEDS LTD.
