Srila ModJacks fall 3-2 to visiting neighbors Port falters once more against league-leading LB Merchants By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Whenever the Port Perry MoJacks and Little Britain Merchants get together, you can be sure of a couple of things. The game will be fast and enter- taining with lots of heavy hitting, and most likely the outcome will be decided by a single goal. That's exactly what was on the menu at the Scugog Arena Sunday night. Unfortunately, for the Modacks, they once again came out on the low end of a 3-2 score. The Merchants have won all four times the teams have met so far this season and three of the games have been by a single goal. Previous games ended in the Merchants favor 4-3, 6- 51in OT and 7-4. But a loss is still a loss no matter what the score and at this stage of the season, the MoJacks can ill afford them as they battle three other teams for a playoff berth in the Central Junior C League. Coach Brad Menzies would gladly have settled for a tie against the Merchants. "It would have been a huge point for us if we could have got it," he said following the game played in front of one of the largest crowds at the Scugog Arena this season. Menzies was not unhappy with the effort he got from his troops, especially in the first and third peri- ods, stating that effort should have been enough for at least a deadlock on the scoreboard. "They have a good team," he said of the Merchants who stand well out in front of the rest of the pack in the Central League standings. "With a break or two, we can beat them. But, we just have to move on and not dwell on (the loss) or worry about it." He's right. The ModJacks are at gut-check time with just 11 games to play, and they don't have the lux- ury of looking over their shoulders at all the "could-have-should-have beens" that have dogged their heels all season. With 23 points, they are tied with Uxbridge in the basement of the six team loop. As just four teams qualify for post-season play, they must pass Uxbridge and then catch either Georgina or Bobcaygeon who have 26 and 27 points repectively. The MoJacks got off to a quick start against the Merchants, grab- bing the lead at 4:02 of the first when Donovan Reid deflected a pass behind Steve Thomas in the visitors' cage. Seth Gray and Dale Drummond drew the helpers. But four minutes later, Darryl James tied the game with a hard blast from between the faceoff circles that gave Jeff Mackie no chance. And the gang in red went up 2-1 in the final minute of the period on a power play when Andrew Rae got credit for a goal that came off a wild scramble around the goal crease. Mackie made a couple of stops but was not able to smother the loose puck. Rae got the third Merchant goal mid-way through the second frame, a bit of a late Christmas gift when the MoJacks were guilty of sloppy clearing in their own zone. That score stood until 10:19 of the third when Darryl Sennachal and Adam Bonneveld went in two- on-one and Sennachal converted a pass at the goal-mouth. A major penalty to the Merchants Bryan Logan with 1:41 left in the game gave the MoJacks a great opportunity to get the equalizer. With Mackie on the bench for an extra attacker, they applied lots of pressure and actually put one over the red line, but it was immediately waved off by the ref who ruled a couple of white sweaters were in the goal crease. The ModJacks probably sealed their own fate during a stretch in the second period when they had several quality scoring chances but were not able to turn on the red light. Sennachal had a clear breakaway while killing a penalty and a Merchant lost his balance at the Modack blue line. He fired the puck into the pads of Thomas with a defender right on his heels. Casey vanSchagen deflected a perfect centering pass from Brent Lazary, but the puck again went right into Thomas' pads. And Lazary displayed a bit of magic when he stickhandled his way through several Merchants for a clear shot on net. His backhand from 10 feet not only cleared the cross bar, it sailed over the glass as well. It was that kind of a night. It's been that kind of season. Captain Scott Heasman had to be taken from the ice on a stretcher late in the game with a suspected knee injury. Just how serious the injury was not known Sunday night, but team officials are hoping he won't be out of action too long. And rugged Matt Glen, who has missed a couple of matches with a concussion, hopes to be back in action this week. The team needs his toughness and could have used him against the Merchants. Jeff Mackie continues to provide the MoJacks with quality goaltend- ing and coach Menzies said he'll stay with this stopper "until he gets hurt or tired." Or until they can put a wrap on a playoff spot. SLAPSHOTS: In other action over the weekend, Bobcaygeon boost- ed their playoff hopes greatly with two wins over Uxbridge, 6-1, and Georgina 5-4. The Merchants ganged up on Colborne 6-1. The Merchants will be in action New Year's Day at home when they meet Bobcaygeon for a 2 p.m. tilt. For the ModJacks, another crucial week is here as they travel to Lakefield tonight (Dec. 30) And this coming Sunday (Jan 4) they have a game of enormous importance when the Bobcaygeon Bullets pay a visit to the Scugog Arena. This is one of the teams the MoJacks must overtake for a playoff berth.
