18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 20, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" --_ SPORTS Mike's Food Basics Juveniles bounce Manvers 7-3 Basic Boys After a recent sluggish game against Manvers, where they blew a late lead the Mike's Food Basics Juveniles unloaded on their opponents on Jan. 14 and came up with a 7-3 victory at home. This comes at a good time as the Basic Boys are tuning up for a playoff run which should start the end of January. Good rushes, passes, stick-handling, back-checking and top notch defense was the order of the night, as everyone gave 100 per cent plus for the victory. Matt Phillips got things going early in the first after being set up by Jamie Levon and Kent Johnston. Then Matt again received a pass from Ian Shrigley late in the first, for his second. Matt put out a great effort for his hat trick but it eluded him. Kevin Hobbs scored early in the second with Kent and Kevin Gray assisting. Three minutes later, defenseman Mike the year, after receiving a pass from the faceoff, from Hobbs and Ian Shrigley again. Jamie Levon then got Port's fifth, unassisted, after intercepting a pass at center ice and beating both of Manvers' defense. Matt Hobbs also intercepted a pass after that and he also netted one unas- sisted. The final goal was the prettiest as Morden went end to end for his first of - unload on Manvers in recent play Jamie carried the puck over the blue line headed straight for the net and a defense- man. He then took out the defenseman and dropped the puck for Kevin Gray who was following. Kevin had numerous goal scoring chances earlier and was robbed. This time, he waited until the goalie dropped, and then stuck it in the right top corner. Very pretty. Jay Sawdon played steady in goal, with a shutout going until the 12:00 minute mark of the second. ~ This was a very good game, and to top it off, it was penalty free, that's right "penalty free." The success of this team that night was due to a complete team effort. The defense of Ian Shrigley, Mike Morden, Trevor Smith and Kent Johnston was 10 feet tall, stopping rushes by Manvers offense and clearing the front of the net. They also started numerous rushes for Port, and fed big leading passes to 'the forwards, Kevin Gray, Matt Phillips, Matt Hobbs, Brad Shanley, lan McCready, Kevin Hobbs and Jamie Levon. These guys showed that they can really play hockey when they want to and best of all, have fun doing it, because that's what it is all about. Assistant coaches, Jason Phillips and Gary Smith were shocked at the out- standing performance turned in by every player. The playoffs are just ahead. The season finals got underway this past Sunday when the Port Perry Bunnies ringette team (sponsored by Air Durham Heating & A/C) travelled 'to Toronto's west end to take on Brampton. And what an exciting game to watch as Port Perry hit the ice determined to play well and try for a win. As the team was short by a few players everyone had lots of ice time to put to practice everything coach Ken Jeffrey and Wendy Perry had taught them all season. Kevin Blackney had perhaps his best game yet displaying good skating and ring con- trol. Melissa Perry was equally impressive getting control of the ring as she circled the oppositions net waiting for the perfect opportunity to take a shot. Jessica Joncas was there for her team playing strong defence making a beautiful play to break up a Brampton rush. Lindsay McIntosh played very well in a forward position mak- the opposition. The teams collective effort was amazing and resulted in a 9-0 victory. Vanessa Wilde got the shutout as Port Perry's goalie. Goals were scored by Melissa Armstrong, Little Bunnies kick off the season finals winning 9-0 Chad DeCosta and Christine Cooper. Assists went to Chad DeCosta, Christopher Hill, Timothy Edwards and Melissa Perry. Congratulations to everyone. PORT PERRY STAR Monn ing her presence known to From Page 18 above his eye. He got the extra minor and obviously picked the wrong guy in Clarke to instigate fisticuffs. The MoJacks had several good scoring chances in the third, but couldn't find the bomb sights. SLAP- SHOTS: The ModJack power play has been less than aus- picious lately and coach Menzies blamed the lack of practice time in recent "A fight to the end weeks. He said the team will work the power play this week in practice and he promised "a little skating" for the boys as well. Perhaps a bit of a wake-up call as to the importance of the two games with the Bruins. Matt Glenn's shoulder injury might be ready to let him play this coming week- end but captain Scott Heasman is still out with knee ligament damage. Turn to Page 18 In a very high scoring and aggressively played contest the Roosters hand- ed the Aces the defeat by a score of 8-4. The Roosters were led by Jason Warner who had three goals and two assists for a five point game. He also opened the scoring after being set up by Dave Dickson and Reg Templeton. The Aces answered back with a goal from Jarrett Harman assisted by Bill Weisflock. The game did not stay tied for long as the Roosters took a goal lead with goals from Jason Warner who was set up by Dave Dickson and Bruce Smith and Ed Olsen who was assisted by Mike Driscoll. One minute later the Aces responded with a goal from Ken Davidson who was set Roosters double the Aces up by Mark Pehlemann to bring the Aces within one goal. But then the Roosters took over from there with three consecutive goals to take a four goal lead. Goalscorers were Tom Warner with two. HIs first was unassisted as he went to the backhand on a breakaway and his second was set up by Danny Taylor and Carl Fitzgerald. Dave Dickson had the Roosters sixth goal after he received passes from Jason Warner and Bruce Smith Scoring for the Aces was Karl Durham assisted by Jarrett Harman and Ken Little. The Aces final goal was provided by Ken Davidson as he was also set up by Jarrett Harman and Ken Little. WE WISH TO DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING IN OUR CURRENT "CANADA WIDE SALE" Flyer.
