While boards have received details of "stub year" funding that will sustain them until the current school year ends in June, they've been anxiously awaiting word on the permanent funding scheme under which they'll be.working as of next fall. It's announce- ment has been repeatedly delayed by the province. Conventional wisdom has the Tories insisting on cuts to administration, and a focus on classroom spending. That's already evident in moves taken so far. For instance, the gov- ernment has cut the num- ber of school boards 1n the province from 129 to 72, and capped trustees' salaries at $5,000 a year. And the controversial Bill 160 strengthens the province's control of pub- lic education; among many other measures, it gives the province the power to levy education property taxes, which had previously been the domain of school boards. Durham East MPP John O'Toole said 1n an earlier interview that Durham is in a position to benefit from the new formula because of efforts to trim administrative costs already taken. "Our board in Durham 1s one of the lowest-spend- ing boards in the province," he said. "I do not anticipate they would experience a disadvan- tage (under the new fund- ing scheme)."
