12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 14, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Scugog Christian Church welcomes new pastor By Chris Hall Port Perry Star When word came to his Charlottetown home that a call had been put out for a new pastor in Port Perry, Norm Sennema was quick to respond. The Hamilton native says that while he quite enjoyed his four-and-a- half years at his church on Prince Edward Island, he knew it was time to move on. "It's part of the denom- ination... the calling pro- cess. You can move to any Christian Reform church within the United States or Canada when they put a call out for someone," he said Friday at his new home in Port Perry. When he heard word of the call last autumn, Rev. Sennema made con- tact with Scugog Christian Reform Church. He and his family flew to Ontario in December for an interview, and to meet the congregation of more than 300. The Prince Albert church will be his second charge after spending four years at the Calvin Seminary in Grand Rapids, Michigan. "I'm just getting to know the area, but I like what I see so far," said Rev. Sennema. 136 River Street, Seagrave member of Ontario Crafts Council Victoria County Studio Tour participant Through The Looking Glass presents STAINED GLASS CLASSES Beginner, Lampmaking, Stepping Stones Please call now for pre-registration Classes Commence Mon., April 20, 1998 daytime & evening classes available with a limited enrollment of 8 per class TOOLS & SUPPLIES AVAILABLE (905) 985-2945 "It's kind of a split between Charlottetown and Toronto. Life has a slow pace out East, while things happen so fast in Toronto; this is some- where in between." Rev. Sennema was introduced to the commu- nity during a ceremony at the church last week. He was pleasantly sur- prised when Mayor Doug Moffatt, Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden, and Ward 2 Councillor Ken Carruthers dropped by to say hello. "Places I've been.... the mayor or councillors have not come out to the church to greet you. It was nice to see them there," he said. While his main respon- sibilities here will include preaching, teaching and pastoral care, he says that he wants to see his charges become more active in the community. "My goal is to make this church more community focused," he explained. "This is a small area and it allows me more opportunities to help peo- ple, and to help me with my personal development Norm Sennema answered the call last autumn when the Scugog Christian Reform Church called and officially started as the pastor at the Prince Albert church recently. Accompanying him on his move from Charlottetown, PEI, is his wife Valerie, daughter Janelle, and sons Timothy and Nathan. Accompanying him on years, and his three chil- his move to Port Perry dren Timothy, 7, Nathan, are Valerie, his wife of 10 5, and Janelle, 2. as a pastor; this is a great chance for me to continue my education as well.
