"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 14, 1998 - 27 SPORTS Glen Thompson scores with 13 seconds remaining in the third Late goal gives Port's Aldon Bantams league championship Port Perry Aldon Bantams won the "A" Championship in travelling house league play at the Scugog Arena on Saturday night. The Aldon team played positional hockey all year and won first place in league play against teams from Keswick, Uxbridge, East Gwillimbury and Port Perry, nine teams in all. The playoffs began with a round robin format, with three divisions. The Aldon Bantams won their first series with two consecutive wins and advanced to the "A" Division Championship Series." Aldon opened the "A" series with a 5-1 win over Port Perry Emmerson. Emmerson played strong hockey all year and placed second in league play. The second game was against the speedy Keswick Canadiens, last year's winners. Port Perry won 3-1 with a strong team effort and advanced to the league champi- onship game at the Scugog Arena, against the reigning champs, the Keswick Canadiens. Keswick was ready, Port Perry Aldon was prepared to do battle, and the one game, winner take all championship game was on. Keswick opened the scoring early in the first period. Port Perry goalie D'Arcy Stephens made four exceptional saves to keep the game close. Keswick led 1-0 after the first period of play. Port Perry scored their first goal in the second period to tie the score 1-1. Justin Overy scored from David Halward and Glen Thompson. Port Perry scored again to take the lead 1-2. David Halward, one of the fastest skaters in the league scored from the nifty Glen Thompson. Keswick pressured the Port Perry defense but the "twin towers," Mark Richardson and captain Greg Lansdale played strong defensively. Mike Wiseman and Devon Symes also played superbly and head manned the puck as planned. Keswick was held in check and Port Perry led 2-1 after the second period. The Port Perry defense played great, the wingers backchecked, the goaltending was super, and once again team play paid off, Port Perry scored to cushion their lead 3-1. Glen Thompson scored on a nice pass from Justin Overy and Catherine Cooke. Keswick never quit and kept pep- pering the Port Perry net with many blistering shots. Keswick scored two quick goals to tie the game 3-3 late in the third period. It looked like sudden death overtime was inevitable. But as the time clock ticked away the last few seconds the nifty Glen Thompson broke up through the centre zone and received a nice pass from David Halward. Glen put a great stickhandling move on the Keswick defenseman and now had a breakaway. Glen scored with only 13 seconds left to play in the game. Trevor Robins also assist- ed on the goal. Keswick managed another good scoring chance with only three seconds left in the game but D'Arcy Stephens made the save and Port Perry Aldon Transmission Bantams were the new champions.
