Competing in the 10 kilometer distance, Helen took third spot in her division. What made this all the more impressive was the fact that this was Helen's first ever event. There were almost 200 rid- ers out for this first event of the season. Helen's third place fin- ish in the 10 kilometer open event for women was com- pleted in a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 55 seconds. Helen finished 10 minutes out of first, and only 30 sec- onds behind the second place rider. Riding ages are varied for these events, with the youngest riders in the under 12-year-old range and the oldest are pushing 60 years. The races are marked by electronic time keeping, lunch, T-shirts for all riders and great specta- tor viewing for all the events. There are male and female categories at all age levels, with the number of women riders growing each day. As an added bonus, Alpha Racing has launched a new Thursday night fun ride series for the Bethany location. Starting on April 23, riders can hit the trails at 6:30 p.m. and ride until dusk. With a price of only $5 (or $50 for the entire summer), riders can con- tinue to work in an off-road environment between events, or come out to try mountain bike riding with- out any concern for com- peting against others. All the events are held off-road, and feature a mix of single and double track, varied terrain, and dis- tances of 10, 20 and 40 kilo- meters.
