"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 28, 1998 - 13 Weary Blackstock residents want more police patrols By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Sitting on a sofa in her apartment, located at the "four corners" of Old Scugog Rd. and Church St. intersection, a Blackstock woman looks out her win- dow and waits. Michele Davies knows that if she sits there long enough, she will see what she really doesn't want in her small community... in front of her small apart- ment. While she and others in the area are bothered by loitering, noise, and van- dalism by teens, Ms Davies says the most pressing con- cern is the frequency with which drivers run the stop signs at the four-way stop corner. "There are constant problems with the teenagers here. Wreckless driving, damaging proper- ty, being loud... it's all annoying, but someone will get hurt if they keep run- ning the stop signs," she said, holding a petition containing the signatures of 74 people who are plead- ing for more police patrols in the area. "They're going to speed by here... not stop at the corner and someone is going to get hurt, get killed." In her apartment build- ing alone there are children ranging from the ages of two to nine and older; all of them are at danger in and around their home as well as area parks, parents fear. Blackstock has also been a constant target of vandals, she said. They've broken windows in local buildings, stolen a fire extinguisher out of a parked school bus, and damaged her car by smash- ing windows, scratching it and ruining her exhaust system, she said. "You just can't leave stuff laying around out- side," she continued, point- Hwy. 7A is to be resurfaced Durham East MPP John O'Toole has announced the tendering of a contract for the resurfacing of Highway 2 The project will involve the two lane road resurfacing of Highway 7 from Durham Road 6 to Beaver Street, Blackwater and from Highway 7A to Highway 417 for a distance of 11.9 km The call for tenders for Contract N. 98-33 will commence on April 22 and notification will appear in the Daily Commercial News. "I guess what we really need is the cops to come out here and look around; to spend a Friday night here and watch what's hap- pening. It'd be nice if they could come when we call... not two hours later." Staff-Sgt.
