"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 28, 1998 - 23 Sr PORT PERRY STAR ORTS Lob ball tourney a fundraiser for the kids CMB seeking teams for annual adult tournament The Cartwright annual Spring Adult Mixed Lob Ball Tournament scheduled for Saturday, May 30 is looking for teams and play- ers. The one day tourna- ment 1s a fundraiser for Cartwright Minor Ball, and in recent years has served as a kick-off tournament for many local teams. With the completion of new dia- monds at the public school last year, the league is ready for another great tournament and season of ball. Registration fees remain at $200 per team, with prize money allocated on the basis of the number of teams entered. The one day format for this tournament is a major plus for many players as the time com- mitment 1s realistic in terms of other obligations on precious weekend time. As in past years, local umpires will be asked to volunteer their time and energies to officiate games. The organizers provide all the game balls, bases and scheduling throughout the day. Every team is guaran- teed three games, and six teams will have the oppor- tunity to play in divisional finals. Through such fundrais- ers as this annual tourna- ment, Cartwright Minor Ball has raised nearly $25,000 over the past six years. These monies have gone into the Future Park Development Fund, and have been put to good use. Last year the association spent approximately $20,000 on park upgrades and new diamonds at the public school in Blackstock. Future initiatives for the association include poten- tial park development in Caesarea and at the Blackstock Fairgrounds. With just a few weeks to go, organizers are anx- 1ous to confirm teams and arrange the schedule. Anyone interested in plac- ing a team in the tourna- ment should call Ron Martyn at 986-5952 or Donna Drew at 986-4588. Use free season pass at Bethany track Not since "Easy Rider" has riding free for the sum- mer been so easy. That is, if you are into mountain biking or want to take part in this fast growing sport. Alpha Racing, in coopera- tion with several local sponsoring bike shops, is promoting a program whereby purchases of new bicycles can obtain a free season pass to the Alpha "Farm Thursday Night Riding" series. This is not a race series, but a recre- ational ride series. Among the local shops participating in the Ride Free program are Bicycles Plus in Oshawa and Impala Cycles of Whitby. As sponsors of Alpha events, these bike shops are eligible to provide pur- chasers of new mountain bikes with Alpha season passes to "The Farm Thursday Night Ride" series. The season pass is a $50 value, which is an added bonus when pur- chasing a bike from one of these participating deal- ers. : The Thursday Night Ride is located on private property south of Bethany. With over 10 kilometers of trails, the site offers a tremendous variety of sin- gle and double tracks, all of which are off road. The ride is not a race, and rid- ers are encouraged to ride at their own pace and routes that are geared to their riding levels. As an Ontario Cycling Association (OCA) event, riders must wear helmets at all times. The free season pass covers the rider's fees for the season, including OCA insurance, as well as com- plimentary water, perfor- mance fluids, chain lube station and bike wash facilities and an added bonus, sponsoring shops are providing draw prizes Take advantage of great deals offered by local bike shops every Thursday evening and all registered riders are eligible to win each week they are in atten- dance. Anyone can ride on Thursday evenings with either a day registration ($5 per rider), or season passes can be purchased at the Bethany location for $50 any Thursday evening. In response to the broad interest in the sport, family passes are available at a cost of only $125 for the season. Location details are avail- able at local shops, or peo- ple can call 905-986-0959 for further details. So before setting out to purchase that next bicycle, give careful consideration to the added bonuses avail- able at these local shops. And once you have made that purchase, come on out to Bethany and join in on some good riding and great times. OASA meets to discuss plans for '98 ball season Port Perry and District Minor Softball Association hosted the O.A.S.A. 76th Annual Convention and general meeting at the Holiday Inn (Oshawa) on April 3, 4 and 5. Mr. Kevin Walker (formerly of Port Perry) was elected to a second term as president of the O.A.S.A. Friday evening's entertainment was provided by Port Perry High School's Jazzmerize who gave a most enjoyable performance. Mr. Lance Brown of CFTO TV did a tremendous job as the Master of Ceremonies on Saturday evening. The O.A.S.A. made a presentation honoring four local companies (Brian's Towing, Hank's Pastries, Lake Scugog Lumber and Van Camp Contracting) for their con- tinued dedication as team sponsors for Port Perry and District Minor Softball, since its inception in 1962. Entertainment for the dance following dinner was provided by Phoenix. Door prizes and flowers for the event were pro- vided by many local merchants. The con- vention was a great success and proceeds Turn to Page 24 CHRIS HALL / PORT PERRY STAR SUCCESSFUL SEASON: The Prince Albert Public School Junior Girls bas- ketball team recently wrapped up a successful season. Season's Over The 1997/98 Port Perry Minor Hockey year has come to a close and organizers are preparing for next year By Linda Ashton The 1997/98 hockey season has all but come to a close. The final meeting of the season will be the Annual General Meeting which will be held Sunday, May 31 at 7 p.m. at the Scugog Community Centre. All parents of Port Perry Minor Hockey players are welcome to this meeting. This is the time to put forth your sug- gestions for the upcoming season and help us make any improvements that you feel will benefit all of the players involved in the system. If you are interested in becoming a member of the board of direc- tors we hold our elections at this meeting. [f you are not able to attend the meeting but are interested please give your letter of intent to any existing board member to take to the meeting for you. We are always looking for new members and new ideas. Unfortunately there will probably be an increase in rates for Minor Hockey ice timg this year. The projected amount is approximately 10 per cent. This means an addition of $10,000 to our budget so if you have some suggestions on how to meet this increase without raising fees please let us hear them. At this time I would like to congratulate the current executive on a job very well done. Each board member gave everything they could to make this year a great suc- cess. It takes a great deal of dedication to make this organization what it is and I would personally like to say thank you. To each and every coach who spent numerous early and late hours at the rink you are the backbone of Port Perry Minor Hockey and there would be no hockey without you. You may only hear complaints from some people but hopefully they are few and far between and the executive knows that you are there for the majority of players to make it fun and fair. Thank you from the executive. To the parents who are also at the rink early in the morning and late at night, thank you for your support. We would like to have our ice time in prime hours but there just isn't enough available ice at the present time. Thank you for encour- aging your young hockey players to play fair and show good sportsmanship both on and off the ice. Remember to set a good example yourself when at the rink and it will always be a great place to go and enjoy. Thank you to our sponsors for their continued support. All of our players are proud to wear the Port Perry Predator logo with the name of their sponsor on the back of their jerseys. Last but not least, a very big thank you to all of our Minor Hockey players for providing us with the best entertainment we could ask for. I know that every player tries to the best of his or her ability to play the game. I was starting to have a bit of burnout towards the end of the season and was lucky enough to convene the Novice Rep. Tournament near the end of the season. The hockey that I saw played by these kids was amazing and | had forgotten what a joy it is to watch the kids at a young age. The older years are still fun but a little more stressful to watch. Also the day that I spent at the rink for all the house league finals was a day to remember too. The stands were full almost all day long with parents cheering their players on to victory. Whether your player won or lost they are all champions in my mind. We will be offering mail-in registration again this year. Please watch the papers for more information as to where to pick up your forms. The Minor Hockey voice mail will be updated with the information as well, as soon as we get our budget ready for the 1998/99 season. Have a safe summer and see you in the fall.
