But it's one they really don't mind at all, says Grand Knight Norm Haugen. Thanks to a record haul at last week- end's Annual State Convention in Toronto, the Immaculate Conception parish has run out of room to put the club's plaques on the church wall. "It looks like we're just about out of room," Mr. Haugen said Friday, pointing to a board containing 25 other awards the club has obtained since its inception in 1985. "But it's a good problem, and I think we can find room for more," he continued with a hearty laugh. The reason for the overabundance of plaques is that throughout the May 15-18 conference, Mr. Haugen, the lone repre- sentative for Port's club, was loaded up with five awards, a record year for the small delegation. Mr. Haugen picked up plaques for the Best Bulletin and Best Council for clubs with under 45 members; a Trillium Award for keeping book work in order; and an honorary mention in the Project Award for having Wayne Weible speak at the Scugog Community Centre last spring. But the most impressive award he brought back was the hardest -- and most unexpected -- one of all: Best Overall Council in Ontario. "I was so surprised when they announced that we had won it. It's the top award for the province; they only award one each year and we're the ones who got it," said Mr. Haugen. "We concentrated on submitting our stuff for the best council in the division but that is not something you try to get; if we did, there'd be no way we'd get it. It was a pleasant surprise." One of the reasons Port Perry beat out roughly 450 other councils in Ontario is because of members' dedication to the club, said Mr. Haugen. "We're a small council, but we work together. There's groups with more than triple our numbers, but we have a good turnout at our events and projects," he said. Port's council will also be looking to claim their sixth Star award later this year. Clubs must complete activities for youth, community, family, council, and church to be eligible for the award from the Supreme Council. The Knights of Columbu S raise money through yard sales, auctions, dinners, dances and raffles to give to the community. Besides donating $25,000 to the Immaculate Conception Church and its restoration, the local council supports a minor hockey team, the Big Brothers/Big Sisters, the VIP (Values Influence Peers) program, a basketball freethrow contest and other local activities.
