Six kids taken to hospital after van collides with bus Six area children were sent to hospital in Port Perry last Wednesday after the driver of a van swerved to miss a cat and collided with a school bus. Durham Regional Police said that around 4:40 p.m. on June 3 a 38-year-old Ridgeview Dr. resident was heading south on Simcoe St. with her two daughters aged 9 and 12, when a black cat ran out in front of her 1994 Nissan van just north of Scugog Line 3. In an attempt to avoid hitting the cat, the driver swerved towards the right shoulder, but killed the cat anyway. She then attempted to swerve back onto the roadway but lost control of her vehicle and it went into a sideways spin, say police. The right front side of the van slammed into the front left side of the bus. The impact drove the bus wheel under- neath the front end of the vehicle. It.came to a rest near the west side of the road. The accident occurred about 21 metres north of Scugog Line 3. Emergency crews quickly responded, and six children were taken to the Port Perry site of North Durham Health Services. The children, students from R.H. Cornish Public School in Port Perry, were returning from an Oshawa track meet at the time of the incident, should consider themselves "very lucky", said Sgt. Ken Hudson. "Everyone was lucky because there were no serious injuries; this was a story of inches. Someone could have been killed because this was a very serious accident." The incident is still under investigation. The van, worth about $12,000, was dam- EE a EE a -- ~~ "Sure-fire delight for Spice Girl everywhere." The bus sustained considerable damage, police say, estimat- ing that between $10,000 and $15,000 in repairs need to be done to the frame, body, front wheels and a broken axle. Animal control theft Durham Regional Police are looking into a break-in at the Uxbridge-Scugog Animal Control office on Reach St. after thieves stole a small quantity of cash sometime overnight June 1. After removing a screen on a southeast window to gain entry to the building thieves smashed open an office safe, taking a small amount of cash. The thieves smashed a donation container and made off with approximately $100. Scam warning issued Durham Police are advising residents of the northern part of the region to be on their guard against a home renovation scam. The warning comes after a 75-year-old Zephyr woman was duped out of close to $3,000 by a man who came to her home and told her the roof needed repairs. Police say the man came to her home on April 29 and, after inspecting the roof for close to 90 minutes, convinced the woman that her home needed repairs. She signed a blank cheque and gave it to the man, say police. He filled out the cheque for $2,900 and cashed it at a local bank using photo identification. Durham Police are warning residents to be on their guard against such scams. "If a stranger comes to your door and tells you you need to fix something, check it out first with a local contractor," Sgt. Ken Hudson said.
