12- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 14, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Potential for more strikes in U.S., says Oshawa rep From page 1 pen," he said. "What hap- pens in Canada and the U.S. is two very different things. With the American process any local, depend- ing on the issue, can enter a strike situation at a given time. It's not like that in Canada. If there is a con- tract agreement it has to be honored for the life of the contract or it is an ille- gal strike. In the U.S. if the circumstances arise, they strike. "There is a potential for another strike, but we'll have to wait and see." The only work occurring in Oshawa plants is at the truck plants, where changes are still being made to convert the plant for this fall's production of the 1999 GM extended cab pickup. Mr. Low, however, would not comment on reports that the local truck plant has only enough parts stockpiled for one week. The long-running strike leaves almost 65,000 Oshawa-area workers who usually work at the two car plants off the job. GM pro- duces the Chev Monte Carlo and Luminas here, as well as the Buick Regal and Century. § 14 I Sr ma ty | - -- : iW 208 36 months/$1,530 down payment/ $645 freight NO SECURITY DEPOSIT . Maintenance staff at the two local car plants also received their layoff notices yesterday morning. Other Ontario sites, such as parts and compo- nents plants in St. Catharines and Windsor, have also been shut down for close to a month. Also affected are employees at the Chev Camaro/Pontiac Firebird production plants in St. Therese, Quebec. And, even if a deal was struck between the two sides, the Oshawa car plants would still be silent for at least one week, a Toronto daily newspaper reports, because at least 24 other plants are ahead of them on the list to receive parts. GM Canada spokesper- son Charles McGregor has confirmed that no matter what happens with the strike, GM has lost more than $1 billion so far. "They're estimating that about a year of production at a high volume plant has been lost across North America," he said.
