"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 5, 1998 - 27 Durham Outlook closes teen shelter after funds run dry At the most recent board meeting, on July 23, Durham Outlook for the Needy reviewed the operational challenges cur- rently being faced at the shelter for youth, that we operate in Oshawa, known as The Ark. In January of this year the board approved the establishment of and Ad Hoc Committee to develop long range plans for the continued operation, and to do some problem solving of the present challenges faced at The Ark. At this meeting the Ad Hoc committee reported that it was unable to fulfill its mandate. The following motion was therefore passed by the board: "After careful and prayerful discussion of the current crisis, possible." For the past three years our staff and board have struggled to serve the young people in our community who, for a variety of reasons, found themselves homeless. Our experience has shown us that these children of our community are indeed in need of help. Our experience also showed us that we did not have sufficient funds to maintain this operation over the long term. In the year 1997 we experienced a short fall in funding of operational expens- es in the nature of $20,000. This year it appears that we can anticipate more of the same. Last year's shortfall was met by remortgaging property. This is no the community to take more responsibility for this growing crisis. It is our hope and prayer that a group, with more resources than we have, will accept the challenge to care for these valuable people who are so often labeled as problems. There is a desperate need to help the homeless youth of our region. The Ark is the only such shelter that provides this service in the Region of Durham. With its closure there is now no safe resource to which these young people can turn. While we may have failed in this particu- lar ministry, we still very much believe in the mission.
