According to Neil Moore, a crops specialist with the Port Perry Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Farm and Rural Affairs office, the plentiful rains and sunshine in Scugog have kept local fields on track. "Things should be in pret- ty good shape; we're getting reasonably good rains and lots of high temperatures," he said yesterday, the morn- ing after a long series night thunderstorms brought up to two inches of rain to the area. "Some are still working on their late spring harvest but right now is a quiet time for most people," he said. "Beans and corn are ripening up nicely; they're coming up fairly rapidly. We're still at least two weeks ahead in most places, others are closer to three." Scugog, he says, is not experiencing the drought conditions other areas of Ontario are currently fight- ing through. "We're definitely not in a drought situation. We're get- ting good rains and we're okay now. Most fields are in good shape -- some even have water pooled in them," he said, adding that there 1s only the odd pocket of land that is still in desperate need of moisture. If growing conditions remain constant, bean crops could be harvested in about three weeks while coin silage harvesting would start a week prior to that. This year, he continues, has been quite a turn-around from 1997. "At this time last year we where about two weeks behind schedule so I'd say we're about a month ahead of 1997. If we don't get any frost until mid-September we'll be doing great," Mr! Moore said, adding that last week's night-time tempera- ture drop to single digits delayed growth somewhat. A killing frost is deemed as anything below minus two Celsius. "It'll take them a couple of days to regroup, to start growing again. If we can keep the nice weather until mid-October or so we'll have perfect weather for harvest- ing. We're going to have a reasonably good yield this year." The only problem with the 1998 growing season, he says, is that farmers will see a slight drop mn their prices because farmers all over North America are experi encing similar good condi tions. "The crop price 1s gong to be down, maybe by as much as 25 per cent, because everyone is having a good year and they're all compet- ing to see their goods."
