10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 1, 1998 Exchange new experience for French girl, local family By Chris Hall Port Perry Star We may be a world apart, but it's what we eat that make us different from the French, says an exchange student. Anne- Laure Marchal, a 13-year-old native of France, says the biggest differ- ence between her home of Lauw and Port Perry, her residence for the next three months, are our eating and grocery shop- ping habits. Since her arrival in Toronto on Aug. 17, and joining the Gibson family two days later, Anne-Laure has been experi- encing a lifetime of changes, says her exchange guardian Heather Gibson. Through the Canadian Education Exchange Foundation (CEEF), Anne- Laure and Mrs. Gibson's daughter, Hilary, will each spend three months with families in foreign countries. The program was made possible by an arrangement between both school boards in Ontario and Europe. Hilary Gibson will spend three months in France beginning next February. Besides having an opportunity to visit another country, Anne-Laure says she looks forward to improving her English. "For the language, and to see (a) new country," she said when asked why she chose to participate in the program. "It's Dr. Brian Hadden, O.D. While growing up in a small town of about 900, she has spent time in New York, Washington, and neighboring coun- tries such as Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Holland. And, while in Canada, she'll have a full schedule said Mrs. Gibson,. "She's already been to Niagara Falls, the SkyDome, shopping at the Eaton Centre, the library, kayaking, mini-putting at Country Acres, and we're planning on taking her to Canada's Wonderland, the science centre, and the ROM." Besides some amazement over how we shop for groceries -- in France they shop each day, and Anne-Laure is astounded that Canadians can plan what they want to eat when they buy enough for a week -- Mrs. Gibson says the girl was shocked when she realized that Canadians don't greet each other as affectionately as they do in France. "The biggest thing was the culture here for her; she was surprised that we don't kiss or hug people when we meet them." Mrs. Gibson said the idea of the exchange came about almost a year ago when her 13-year-old daughter brought home information on the exchange pro- please bright your I.D. and Donor Card Co-ordinated by FIDELITY LODGE 428 at the MASONIC LODGE Port Perry For further information please contact: Jim Hall at 985-8619 320 Queen St. - "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Anne- Laure Marchal (left) is enjoying a visit to Port Perry. on an exchange program.
