McClelland Port Perry Star A hearing that could send Mitchiel 'Micky' McArthur to prison for the rest of his life is scheduled to start in Whitby early in December. The man convicted for the robbery of the Port Perry Bank of Montreal and the shooting of five people nearly four years ago returned to court briefly last Friday after- noon to have a date set for the hearing to deter- mine if he is a dangerous offender. That hearing will open either December 1 or 2, and is expected to last between two and three weeks as Crown prosecutors present evi- dence of his life of crime and hear from psychia- trists and psychologists who have examined him on several occasions over the past 20 years. The 44 year old McArthur, now in prison in the Kingston area, was found guilty a year ago in April on 17 charges stemming from the bloody bank robbery and shootings the evening of Oct. 24, 1994 at the Port Perry Plaza. They include attempted murder, bank robbery, kidnapping, and use of a weapon while commit- ting a crime. His half-brother Angus, now 32, was found not guilty of the same charges by the same jury. After the guilty ver- dicts were handed down by the jury of six men and six women, Crown prosecutors filed an application to have McArthur declared a dangerous offender. The provincial justice department has given its approval to proceed with the application that will be heard by Justice Harry LaForme of the Ontario Court, General Division. If the judge rules in favor of the application, McArthur will be jailed indefinitely with virtu- ally no chance of release. Other criminals in Canada who have been deemed dangerous offenders include child murderer Clifford Olsen and Paul Bernardo, who was found guilty of the rape and murder of two Ontario school girls.
