"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, October 6, 1998 - 21 SProrTSs ModJacks in the win column A 4-3 victory over the visiting Bobcaygeon Bullets gives the Port Perry squad their win of the 1998-99 Junior C season By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Port Perry MoJacks displayed some spunk and grit to post their first victory of the season Sunday evening at the Scugog Arena. After two consecutive losses, the green and white looked like they might be on their way to three in a row at the hands of the Bobcaygeon Bullets. But they refused to quit and came up with a strong third period rally to clip the visitors 4-3. Rookie Greg Blackburn got the winner late in the third, taking a pass from Adam Bonneveld and blasting a low shot from the blue line that beat Bullet netminder Greg Schell on the stick side. Blackburn's goal was on a MoJack power play; in fact, all four of their markers in the third came with a man advantage, a very positive development for the club which had been struggling to score goals when enjoying the.extra attacker. For head coach Tom Thornbury it was his first victory behind a Junior C bench and he was delighted. "This was a big win for us. The goys worked very hard and never gave up," he told The Star after the final buzzer. Trailing 2-0 after 40 minutes, the ModJacks opened the third with a man" advantage for four minutes and Bonneveld cut the margin to 2-1 at 2:14 on a deflection at the side of the net. The coach said that four minute power play and the fact the ModJacks were able to score was the turn- ing point in the match. The goal really gave the team a lift and a big boost in the confidence department. Tom Chambers tied things five minutes later, also on a deflection on a shot by Dale Drummond. And a little over a minute later, captain Jeff Clarke put the Modacks up for the first time when he whistled a perfect shot from a sharp angle that rattled in off the goal post. But the Bullets were not out of this one, either. They tied the game at 3-3 at 16:09 on a power play of their own as Chris Rainey lifted one high over Jeff Mackie in the MoJack net. With 1:35 left on the clock and the score still tied, Bonneveld grabbed a loose puck at his own blue line and started up ice on a breakaway. He was hauled down from behind deep in the Bullet zone by Dave Clark who was assessed an interfer- ence penalty. That set the table for the Turn to Page 22 Week Four SHL results By Dean Van Camp Special to The Star By Dean Van Camp Cedar Creek Contracting 8 Harrison Fuels 1 Week four of the Scugog Hockey League started off with Cedar Creek blowing out Harrison by the score of 8- 1. Mike McGuinness started the scoring for Harrison on an unassisted effort. However, this seemed to motivate Cedar Creek by causing them to score eight unanswered goals. John Harman found the back of the net after being set up by Nathan Brown. Almost 10 minutes later, Karl Durham scored from Jerry Hall and John Harman. With 12 seconds left in the second peri- od, Dave Milton made the score 3-1 with an assist from Rick Sakanashi. Cedar Creek then scored five goals in the third by John Harman (two), Karl Durham (two), and Dave Milton. Assists were awarded to Nathan Brown (two), Karl Durham. K.C.1. Van & Truck World 1 Monsma Electric 2 Our third game of the morning fea- tured more of a defensive battle with Monsma Electric coming out on top of Van & Truck World, 2-1. Bikes of all sizes and colors were the main attraction of the event, which was also held in Scugog last May. Port Predators rally from a sluggish start to tie Woodville in Midget action The season for the Port Perry Midgets 2 team which is sponsored by Canadian Tire officially got underway this past Saturday with the opener taking place in Woodville. Port Perry looked a lit- tle slow in the opening period as they found themselves down by a 2-0 score fairly early. But Joel Van Camp who had a nose for the net in this contest put his first of two on this night into the unguarded cage after receiving pass- es from Kam Cooper and Wade Ritchie to get Port Perry back in this game. Solid defensive play in this game was provided by John Burnett, Matt Caldwell, Aaron Chambers, and Delaney who certainly made his mark on defence with many large hits to stop the offensive attack of Woodville. Russ Brown was in an aggressive mood on this night as well as he picked up eight min- utes in penalties to con- tribute to Port Perry's total of 32. Port Perry will hope- fully be keeping the penal- ty minutes down in future contests as this total of 16 minors may have been a factor in Port Perry's SEE i ul fo i Rb fb ah SLL en failure to collect the vic- tory. Trailing 4-1 after two periods, coach Bill Van Camp ordered his troops to at least win the third period and his squad came through scoring three unanswered goals. The first Port Perry goal in the final frame came from Joel Van Camp who connected after being set up by Jon Sanders and Jeff Harrison for his sec- ond of the evening. With two minutes remaining Matt Caldwell got Port Perry within one after tip- ping in a pass from Bill Carr with the other Turn to Page 22 -
