School will extend into July this year, and days during the Christmas and March breaks, as well as exam dates, have been chosen as make-up dates, the board said last week. Fourteen instruc- tional days were lost when the board locked its teachers out after they refused to teach a seventh class. Last week the board approved a pro- posal which was jointly agreed upon with the Ontario English Catholic Teachers' Association (OECTA) Durham Secondary Unit. The proposal provides sufficient time to balance semesters, and meet the required 100 mandatory hours per course. Boards affected by strikes are required, under the province's Back-To- School Act, to submit a plan to the Education Minister and outline how they intend to make up lost time. Under the plan, students will now attend school on the following days: * BLACKSTOCK 0 on Dec. 21, 22, and 23 when they were scheduled to be on Christmas break; 0 March 17, 18, and 19 during their scheduled March Break; a June 28, 29, and 30 when PA Days were originally scheduled for: 0 and on July 2, which was previously tabbed as a non-instructional day. Professional Activity Days for teachers have tentatively been rescheduled for May 8 and July 5 and 6. "This has been a very difficult decision to make. However, after the consultation process I am pleased with the results," said board chair Jim McCafferty. "All the lost instructional time will be made up, and the students' educational needs will be met during the school year," Added Director of Education, Grant Andrews: "I am very pleased with the education process that was followed and I am quite happy with the results.
