"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, October 14, 1998 - 27 Midgets explode in the third to crown the County Kings The Port Perry Midget #1 team sponsored by Pineridge Sports, opened their season league play in Wellington fac- ing Prince Edward County Kings. After a quiet first period P.E.C. turned up the offence taking a 2-0 lead. Port rallied but were still down 3-2 at the end of the second period. In the third Pineridge turned the pressure on scoring four unanswered goals for a final 6-3 win. Scoring was well spread out. Dean Van Camp had two goals and an assist and Mark Blakley had three assists. Jason Whitworth, Matt MacMaster, Braden Tarbotton and Deryk Campbell each notched in a goal. Grant Hooker and Sean Jeffrey each chipped in with two assists while Mike Hamilton and Chris Skerratt drew one assist each. Ryan Fraser in net for Port made some fine saves. The Pineridge Midgets next met with Port Hope on Monday night at the Scugog Arena. Port Hope was no match for Port Perry as the Pineridge Sports Midgets cruised to a 10-0 win. Port Hope were more intent on fighting than playing hockey as the game got out of hand early in the third. Mike Hamilton had a really big night with four goals and three assists. Mark Blakley was also hot with two goals and three assists, followed by Braden Tarbotton with four assists. Also helping out in the scoring parade were Ryan McQuade, Deryk Campbell, Matt MacMaster, and Chris Skerratt. Dean Van Camp had two assists, and Jason Whitworth and Grant Hooker had one. Mike MacLennan picked up the win in this game for Port. Over the Thanksgiving Weekend the boys passed on the turkey to participate in the Whitby AA Tournament. On Friday the Midgets played Richmond Hill. This was a close game until Port broke the game wide open with four goals in the second period, adding an additional goal in the third for a 6-1 win. Their next game on Saturday against Scarborough was a bit tougher for Port. However, the offence clicked in the third period as they skated to a 6-2 win. In Sunday's game played against the Oshawa AA the Pineridge Midgets won by a well-deserved score of 3-2. However, the team actually felt a loss owing to the poor sportsmanship on Oshawa's behalf as the boys took some very undeserved knocks at the end of the game and would be down three players going into the semi-final. Monday morning Port was in a semi-final against Clarington with the assistance of five 'AP' players. Everyone put in a great effort despite a 7-3 loss. Those who played throughout the weekend showed that they are most capable of participating in a higher calibre tournament. Many thanks to Matt Caldwell and Wade Ritchie of the Midget #2 team who gave up their weekend to came and play with us. Also thank you to Mike LeFort, Matt Skerratt and Scott Duncan of the Bantam #1 team for their assistance Monday. Next game is Monday, Oct. 19 at 9:15 p.m. at the Scugog Arena.
