Many fond memories of these gatherings are brought to the stage as Port Perry's award win- ning community theatre group The Borelians pre- sents The Dining Room, its first production of the 1998-99 season. There probably isn't a scene throughout this human comedy/drama that we cannot relate to In some way or another, either through our own experience or that of oth- ers. The Dining Room, directed by Ruth Smith and produced by Nancy Bongard, provides a unique insight into the lives of the upper middle class in North America. As the title suggests, all the action takes place in the dining room around a huge table that is wit- ness to nearly every facet of family life. The eras portrayed start with the Depression and work their way through the war years, up to the Sixties and, eventually, the present. In every scene the audience will be able to identify the humour, sen- sitivity and pathos of an event that has taken place in their own lives. It keeps everyone hopping, on stage and in the audi- ence, as the stars of The Dining Room change their roles, personalities and ages almost effort- lessly. For instance, in one moment a grandfather is criticizing his grandson. In agother scene a daugh- ter returns home to seek the comfort of her family after her marriage fails. And in another, an old woman fails to recognize her own sons at the fam- ily's traditional Christmas dinner. The Dining Room guarantees its audience many good laughs. The show opened last Thursday, and continues Oct. 29 and 30 at Town Hall 1873.
