"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 10, 1998 - 9 Port Perry's Stonemoor Day Care threw itself a party to celebrate 10 years of providing quality child care to the com- munity last week. Since first opening its doors on Oct. 31, 1988, Stonemoor has built a great reputation with its parents and the com- munity, and is looking to con- tinue that tradition, says supervisor Karen James. "We've got a great environ- ment here for the kids and for the parents," she said. "There's 11 qualified early childhood educators on staff providing both full-time and part-time care." The centre, located at 399 Queen St. -- across from Port Perry High School -- is owned by Joan Pilkington and adheres to a policy of openness which is beneficial to both parents and tots, said Ms James. "We are very open here. We have an open door policy where parents can drop in at any time and visit with their kids. It's important that they know what their children are doing," she said. The day care offers a variety of programs for the youngsters between the ages of 15 months and 12 years, she says. The toddler room accommo- dates those aged 15 months to just over two years, while the junior pre-school looks after kids aged up to three-and-a- Stonemoor celebrates 10 years of caring for kids half years. The senior pre- school section is occupied by children from three to five, and a school-age program is open to those up to 12 years. Caring for such a variety of young people each day is a tough but rewarding job, said Ms James. "It's hectic, but it's really nice to see them grow," she said. "If they stay with the day care, you get to see how they progress and you know you played an important part in that."
