"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 17, 1998 - 3 eae Traffic tie-ups cited by region rep Water St. work now nights to give businesses a break By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Traffic tie-ups and com- plaints from merchants have prompted Durham Region public works offi- cials to change their plans for construction at the intersection of Water and Scugog St. in Port Perry. Project supervisor John Ponsen said workers will now be on the job overnight to comply with requests from area busi- nesses and motorists. "Things are going well, they're going as sched- uled," he said Thursday morning. "But we've had to make a few changes due to the difficulty of the job. "We're going to switch to evening work to accom- modate the local business- es; we're going to work from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m." The sewer work has resulted in the complete closure of Water St. at the busy intersection with Scugog (Hwy. 7A), and has often meant traffic delays. In addition, a number of businesses in the area have had their road access shut off. "I know we're going to get complaints one way or another (from businesses or tenants) but this time it's going to be for the busi- nesses. We want to get out of there as soon as we can and if we do this -- start- ing Sunday night -- we can have it done in three or four days... definitely by the end of next week." Durham Region works crews began work on a new sanitary sewer pro- ject late last month, and expected to have it com- pleted by Nov. 20. Nursing home plans bazaar The Community Nursing Home and The Port Perry Villa will hold their Annual Christmas Bazaar on Saturday, Dec. 5 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 15941 Simcoe St. N., Port Perry. Free admission. The event will feature a $1,000 cash draw, shut- tle bus, lucky loonie sale, baked goods, over 40 vendors and more. All proceeds to the res- idents activity fund. Department officials deemed the existing sewer -- which runs under Scugog St. from just west of Carnegie St. to Water St., and on Water St. north to Curts St. -- undersized, 29ROO0KS. and in need of replace- ment. While plans called for the work to be done in the fall when traffic volume was considered to be lower, Mr. Ponsen said the number of motorists on the streets of Port Perry has resulted in some back- ups. "We've had a number of complaints and we've decided to accommodate the businesses. We're not saying they're more important than the home- owners, but this is not an easy job and there is a lot of traffic travelling through that area. pen up a "+ Pree Gri ft Wrappitig "* Hassel Free Roeburty Policy a = SSRIS AN 5 5 R@ TS on foot 178 Queen St., Port Perry 985-8334 *some exceptions apply see in-store for details Bl RO ---- -- N_Jcoltltection FILA rickets MARY ROSE AN x kk k hk Kk mac & jac " Gift Cerbificabes @ : Li Service, Quality and Style Since 1881 Cy Present & SAVE!
