Here's our list Dear Santa; Here we are, on the verge of Christmas, and marvelling at the swift passage of yet another year. It's hard to believe 12 entire months have flown by since we last wrote you, and sent along our wish list. Last time around we were selfish, so this year, instead of requesting gifts for ourselves, we thought we'd make some recommendations on behalf of others. Here goes: OQ For Mayor Doug Moffatt, we'd like the undi-- vided attention of Premier Mike Harris, his cabi- net, and Greater toronto Services Board sales- man Al Tonks. Just long enough for them to hear his No Thanks to the GTSB message. So they hear it at last. Q For MPP John O'Toole, an enlarged vocab- ulary for all the explaining he's going to have to do soon. His Tories hit the campaign trail for real in 1999, and he's going to be the guy on the hot seat in this riding. Q For Anne Wanninkhof and all the other folks at the Operation Scugog food bank, we'd like a long winter's nap, followed by days of relaxation. They've done so much for the area's needy this Christmas, and deserve our thanks. Q For Prime Minister Jean Chretien, some humility and compassion, please, before it's too late. But be careful about traipsing around 24 Sussex late at night... Q For farmers here and across the country, a fair and effective farm aid package, quickly. They've had a terrible year, Santa, and could really use a break. Q For hockey fans, continued success for the Toronto Maple Leafs... pretty please? Q For the people of Scugog, a year of peace, prosperity and happiness. Q For us? Aw, shucks... how about some good letters to the editor and a drop in newsprint prices? Happy Holidays, one and all. God Bless. To the Editor: I was one of the Durham Police officers involved in the October '94 Port Perry robbery and shooting. Fortunately I was not one of the five people shot and wound- ed by Mitchiel McArthur, but as one of * the first officers on scene, I witnessed the destruction this man caused, without apparent remorse. This case has been before the courts for four years with McArthur being con- victed for several offenses, including the attempted murder of three police officers. Now McArthur has been in court again before Justice LaForme for a dangerous offender application and sentencing. With what seems to be due course for our En 7 a SA A SS A A % 7 ts te i a i i e IS a Joke criminal court system, the application was turned down and the prison term McArthur sentenced to, an absolute joke. I wonder, and I'm sure other officers do too, what exactly our court system deems a serious enough offense to put these type of career criminals away for life. McArthur affected the lives of five families and I'm sure many more, includ- ing myself that October night in 1994. We will be living with that the rest of our lives. I just hope that when McArthur is released (and he will be), no one has to die....Something has to change. Mike Galloway, Port Perry by J. Peter Hvidsten THE ANTICIPATION OF CHRISTMAS MORNING 8 Excitement and anticipation has Bll been filling the air throughout our © house these past few weeks, as the kids have been counting the days and hours until Christmas morning arrives. 7 A few presents already tucked under the tree are fust to get a hint of what's inside.
