The ice fishing season's off to a great start on Lake Scugog By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Lots of big fish stories can be heard around Port Perry these days ...and some fishermen can even prove them, says a local bait shop owner. "This year is just excel- lent, excellent," Chuck Preston, owner of JD Fishing and Archery Supplies, said last week. "I've heard there's up to 14 inches of ice out there, but mostly 10 to 12 inches. And there's big fish being caught, big fish. "There's been a thirty- and-a-half-inch, 11-pound walleye caught and one at 29-inches and nine-and-a- half-pounds too. There's all kinds of two to four- pound fish out there too; all kinds of them." Jumbo perch are also being pulled out of the lake at a great rate, he added. "I had two guys come in on Wednesday and they said they got 48 walleye and 20 jumbo perch. They kept 10 of the walleye and all of the perch. "She's good out there alright. The early season is always better; the first big freeze makes all the difference." While the ice fishing season didn't officially begin until Jan.1, Mr. Preston says anglers were getting prepared for the season early. "People were popping in now and again in December and the the day before (Thursday, Dec. 31) it got really busy," he said. The season closes Feb. 28. I don't think a warm spell would have much of an effect; the ice is great," said Mr. Preston. "This is the best ice I've seen in years." Also enthusiastic about the great start to the season was Norm Tripp of Causeway Live Bait. "It's been pretty good so far; they're pulling out big fish, and the ice is looking good," he said. "We've got lots of cus- . tomers who say the ice is thick and in good condi- tion and they're getting some pretty big fish." Chris Hockley of Kev's Muskie Shop also notes that the '99 season is beginning to look like a good one. "It's great. Business is great this year. The fish are fantastic; the average size this year is bigger than any previous year... It's going to be one of those good years," he said. "They're getting a lot of big fish but they're also putting a good number back too, which is good," said Mr. Hockley. "There's not too many huts right now -- they're just going out and stand- ing around or sitting -- but once the season gets on I imagine they'll start hauling them out."
