A scoreless first period resulted as both teams worked hard and had several shots but neither goalie was letting anything in. Mark Carnaghan was between the pipes for Port this game and played very well throughout the entire game for us. The second period saw Port put a goal in first at 3:17 courtesy of the line of Justin Sanders, Kevin Gloster and Ryan Belair. Manvers was determined not to finish the period without a goal and put one in with 48 seconds left to tie it up. A break to do the ice between the second and third was not to our advantage as Manvers came out to score three quick goals in the first minute to catch our players off guard and all of a sudden they lead the game 4-1 We didn't give up though and Dave McGarry worked hard and scored the next two goals with Matt Kamminga's help and we were back in the game. Kevin Gloster tied the game up with his unassisted goal at 6:05 to finish the scoring 4-4. Thursday, Jan. 7 Ops came into town to play the Predators. The Ops team got off to a good start midway through the first period with the first goal. Kyle Mullins tied the game with 44 seconds left in the period. He got a nice pass from Justin Sanders to put it in. Kevin Gloster gave us the lead early in the second as his shot went off the Ops goalies head and in. Matt Kamminga and Dave McGarry picked up the assists on that one. Helping Leo Tallion in net and making some saves for the team was Adam Smart who plays defence and some- times goalie. Before the period ended Ops had tied the game up again at 2-2. The third saw Joe Kozlinski shoot in the final goal for Port Perry with Shane Jeffrey's help, but Ops was not giving up without a fight. They tied the game again at 2:42 and that was the end of the scoring for both teams and Port skated away with a 3-3 tie. In one of their best efforts this year, against a very strong squad the Predators built up a 2-0 lead going into the third period. It took some late minute heroics by the Uxbridge team who scored three in the final three minutes to clinch the game 4-2. Port Perry opened the scoring in the second on a fine solo effort by Taylor Muir. Taylor muscled his way to the Uxbridge net and drove the puck past the sprawling goaltender. Assists went to Richard VanNetten and Craig Wise. Raymond Petch notched Port's second goal with some nifty stick- handling and a hard low shot inside the far post. Hugh | Allward and Cody Steranka assisted Petch's goal. Despite the outcome, the work ethic, and the positional play of the young Predators heartened Coach Bob Spencely. The Lindsay Muskies' Tournament held on 28th December brought mixed results for the Predators. The first match was against Lindsay at 8:30 am and the boys might have done better to stay in bed for this game. Lindsay punished them with 2 goals in each of the first two periods, and three in the third. The .game ended 7-0 for the tourney hosts. Coach Bob Specncely read the riot act, and tuned the team up for the second match-up against Oro Township. The Oro team managed to squeeze by Lindsay 2-1 in overtime, so Port Perry knew they had their work cut out for them the second game. Whatever the tonic was Coach Spencely dished out, it produced a different team that afternoon. The forwards started skating both ways, forechecking and backchecking. Evan Haslam, Kyle Newbold and Zach Malyon caused no end of trouble for the Oro for- wards trying to break out of their own end. Goalies Fraser Gibson and Cameron Daly were solid between the pipes, both heeding the coach's advice to stand up more and challenge the shooter. Hugh Allward opened the scoring on a break away goal that exemplified his tremendous speed skating with the puck. Despite the constant attempts by the Oro defender to hook Allward from behind, Hugh managed to let go a high wrist shot that beat the goaliecleanly. Assists went to. Taylor Muir and Cory Durwood. . The game was extremely close and tense for the next two periods as both teams went end to end with the puck. Oro tied the game with less than four minutes remaining in the third on a scramble in front of the net. Port Perry managed to keep their adrenaline up, and stepped their pace up a notch. Graeme Brown started a break-out with a pass to Hugh Allward. Allward then telegraphed to puck to Craig Wise who sped up the left wing, and beat the Oro defense by cutting into the centre. Wise found himself alone on the goalie, and he buried it top corner for the winning score. Port came out on top 2-1. The coaches were pleased with the improvements in passing the puck, par- ticularly commending Bryce O'Hare for his unselfish play and passing skills. This game was a great effort from each player on the team, and continuing play at this level should makethe Predators a playoff contender to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, the win was not enough to allow Port Perry to advance any further in thetournament. On December 29th, the Novice Predators travelled to Sutton for an exhibition game. The two teams were evenly matched, however the Sutton team came out on top with a 2-1 victory. Ryan Samis paced the team with fearless forechecking and great hustling. Zach Malyon scored the Predators lone marker on a quick high shot from the deep slot.
