AN "A Family Tradition for 133 Years " PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 2, 1999 - 5 CPR safety device distributed by paramedics here Rural/ Metro Port Perry employees are offering By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Saving a person's life through cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is a heroic act, but it can involve some hazards, say local paramedics. With that in mind, employees working out of Rural/Metro's Port Perry ambulance station have put forth a plan to purchase a number of Pocket Masks to be distributed to anyone who takes it upon them- selves to save a life. "Sometimes before we arrive on scene someone has administered CPR," said Sam Swain, a paramedic with the local base. "It is one thing to learn, but is totally another thing to do. It can be 'unpleasant' "Sometimes it can get pretty unpleasant; the people who do it are pretty courageous, but they may have a few apprehensions about doing it next time if the situation comes up." The Pocket Mask is a small plastic mask that fits over the patient's mouth and nose and acts as a seal and barrier between the victim and paramedic. The mask prevents saliva or vomit from entering the mouth of a would-be lifesaver. Protection for life savers "It's just a little extra protection for people, a bit of a shield. Things can get messy in this sort of busi- ness," said Mr. Swain. "The situation in the '90s is a bit different. There is an increased population, increased elderly people and there are a lot of diseases out there. We are all aware of the health risks." During their duties, paramedics will take down information on any person who administers CPR to a patient before officials arrive. Later, they will be sent a Pocket Mask in case another emergency arises. "I'm surprised by the number of people who know CPR here; we're glad to hear that and with these masks, maybe we can encourage more people to learn CPR or to use it and help save lives," said Mr. Swain.
