The province has selected "Ontario - A Province For All Ages" as its theme for the year. Led by local co-chair Kent Farndale, the three- hour meaging began with an introduction of guest speakers before the provincial Long-Term Care Minister made an announcement and enter- tainment was provided by student musicians from Port Perry High School. Scugog Mayor Doug Moffatt thanked the seniors for all the volun- teer work they have done for the community. "I want to thank you all for your many hours of community effort. You've been key in helping out at the Scugog Shores Museum, at the library and at the hospital... you are active leaders in your community and Scugog Township is in debt to you," said the mayor. Durham East MPP John O'Toole also thanked the seniors before handing the microphone over to Lois Neely, Ontario co- ordinator for the IYOP celebrations. She encouraged seniors to participate in wildlife gardens projects and for every one of Canada's 3,560,000 seniors to plant a tree this year. "We won't benefit from these trees but 20 years down the road other seniors and their kids will." Durham East riding has been awarded $20,000 for IYOP activities. Oshawa school trustee Kathleen Hopper wants her motion for an inde- pendent audit of Durham District School Board finances to proceed, whether the province pays for it or not. Ms Hopper was behind a motion that called for the audit, previously offered by the province to boards looking to cut costs. Last Monday trustees dis- cussed action taken so far, which has amounted to director of education Grant Yeo writing to the education ministry to inquire about funding for the process. "I think the intent of my motion is being lost here," Ms Hopper said. "I think it sounds like we are only interested in an audit if the province will fund it." She said the audit should be undertaken, even if the Durham board has to find the money to pay for it: "It is all tax- payers' money, no matter Trustee wants board to proceed with audit _ put the brakes on any com- where it comes from." Pickering trustee Ruth Anne Schedlich tried to mitment to funding by the school board. "It could be a substan- tial sum of money we are talking about here," Mrs. Schedlich said. "If we would have to pay for this I think it is important to remember that this board is well-known as the most fiscally responsible of the large boards in the province, and the provin- cial government knows this to be true." Ms Hopper made the motion to conduct the audit during debates on the closing of out-of-date school facilities earlier this year. Trustees nar- rowly voted in support of an inquiry into funding for an audit, something the province had offered to the Toronto school board.
