On April 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., chil- drens clothing, sizes infant to 16, maternity clothing, shoes, toys, games, books, boots, bikes and baby furniture are for sale at the Scugog Centre Community Hall (Arena) located at 1655 Reach Street, Port Perry. Over the past seven years, Scugog clothing sales have been well received and have benefitted our com- munity and surrounding area in several ways: a It boosts the food bank ~ at two critical times of the the Operation year, Spring and Fall. Some 25 per cent of the sales go to support the food bank. The average sale nets $1800. 0 An dpportunity is pro- vided to recycle clothing no longer needed and to receive some funds in return for your efforts; 70 per cent of sales go to the persons putting articles into the sale. ICE OUT MARCH 31 11, 1983, although within a week a light skim of ice once again covered the lake, finally disappearing for the last time on March 16. X FR Reaching back 100 years, to the final year of the 1800s, the ice left Lake Scugog on April 25, 1899. A century later we find the ice leaving the lake almost four weeks earlier, on March 31, 1999. Distress Centre seeks volunteers The next two part training workshop to become a volunteer help line worker with Distress Centre Durham's 24- hour telephone helpline will be Sunday, April 25 and Sunday, May 2. To be eligible for training, you must be 18 years or older and complete a telephone screening interview and a face-to-face registration meeting. You must be able to commit to 16 to 20 hours per month, including one overnight shift, from our central Oshawa location, for a period of one year. The centre carefully selects empa- thetic, non-judgmental, responsible individuals and provide intensive training in active listening, crisis intervention and suicide prevention techniques which are of benefit per- sonally and professionally, not just on the phone lines.
