8- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, April 13, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Don't want geese? Lay off the fertilizer, sa By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Homeowners may be doing more damage than good when they use fertil- izers on their lawns. That's the word Larry Wickett, a co-ordinator with the Community Beautification Project, is trying to spread this year as area homeowners get set to start their annual yard work. The use of various fer- tilizers and pesticides on lawns has two major draw- backs: "People who use fer- tilizers usually end up with unwanted geese because they have very developed eyes that can see which lawns are very lush (green) and have the highest nutri- ents available in them," Mr. Wickett said. "And, the fertilizer will end up in the lake eventu- ally, which isn't good. Because it puts more phos- phorous into the lake which results in more algae, weeds, and quite a bad taste." Geese also leave behind lots of manure which already contains high levels of nutrients. And when they eat fertilized grass, it just compounds the problem, said Mr. Wickett. If fertilizer is to be used on a lawn, Mr. Wickett rec- ommends that none be applied within 100 feet of water, and that a pump be set up by the lakeshore and used to water the lawn. The water is already full of . nutrients, he added. All fertilizers on the market can have effects the local ecosystem, Mr. Wickett said. The problem of over-fer- tilizing is already a serious one, and it continues to grow, he added. This is the first year for the Community Beautification Project in Scugog. It is funded by the federal government as part of its Youth Employment Strategy. Ten people from throughout the area -- they are young parents -- will be working on a variety of landscaping projects. They will be contacting lakefront owners to try and promote shoreline natural- ization, said Mr. Wickett. The program is designed to help young people improve their life skills and establish contacts within the working world. landscape expert. Geese in the Scugog area can be a problem, as anyone here knows. But you can keep them off your lawn by avoiding the use of fertilizer, says one Woman 'disgusted' by dog droppings in park The sight of dog droppings scattered throughout parks and other property along the lake front in Port Perry has at least one woman upset. - Jacqueline Hignett, an employee with the federal- funded Youth Employment Strategy, a group working to clean up the local shore line and beautify the area, is disgusted with the amount of dog feces left lying around Palmer Park and the lakefront ball diamonds. "There is no reason for people not to pick up after their dogs... there is just too much of it left down there." she said last week. : "That's an area where kids play; everyone uses the FEATURE RESTAURANT KY [oe ~ COFFEE HOUSE 985-1033 Drop by our place & pick up our small but complete guide to cating & drinking @ The Brown Couch - home of HARD CHAIRS & GREAT COFFEE Eat In (0) r Take Out Bagels - Sandwich - Soup (& other bowl food) Salads - Seasonal Specials & Heavenly Desserts park and the ball diamonds. There is just too much there." Besides the obvious nuisance of just stepping in them, the droppings attract flies and the diseases that come with them, she said. : "I was just outraged when I noticed all of it down there. I even mentioned it to the mayor and to Ken Carruthers," said the Oshawa woman, noting that she's seen only one bylaw sign posted. "With all of it there is a great concern for the lake. It just runs into the ground or down the storm sewer and it's in the lake."
