"Nurses in rural areas need excellent assessment skills to determine the immediate needs of the patient. They don't often have the specialists or the backup resources they would have at larger hospitals." A staff of 270 ensure that both hospital sites in Port Perry and Uxbridge run smoothly, including 93 Registered Nurses (RNs) and 40 Registered Practical Nurses (RPNs). "The RN looks after all the patients; they usually have a broader background and more training. They deal with patients whose outcome is unstable. RPNs deal with those whose situation is certain." Both classes of nurses are required to attend the College of Ontario Nurses to become licensed to work in Ontario, says Mrs. Jamieson. "This gives the public a guarantee of quality. Each year they keep current with their education; nurses are always engaged in learning, it's not over when they graduate. Graduation is just the beginning of a lifetime of learning for a nurse, not the end." Nurses in Port Perry and Uxbridge should be thanked for their work, she adds. "Nursing is an extremely demanding job. We should be grateful that we have such a dedicated group here. They pretty much do it all here."
