A Cochrane St. woman, who has asked not to be named, had her mountain bike stolen from the Medical Associates build- ing on Paxton St. on May 14. After leaving her bicy- cle outside of the building around 2:20 p.m., the woman returned approxi- mately a half-hour later only to discover it missing. "After I found it gone I looked for it and then went back into the office and told them what hap- pened," she said. "They offered me their phone so I could call the police, but told them I lived close so I just walked home and called them from there." At her husband's insis- tence, the pair returned to the Medical Associates building where they con- tinued to look for the bike. "We went back down and I started at the back and made my way around to the front and to the lawn," she said. "There I noticed a girl walking from the building to the road and she said hello to me and asked me what time it was. I told her it was 3:15 and then watched her walk to the road and then got back into the car." The couple then went to the Port Perry Fa IV IAVA SI SESVLN 23 4 25th Anniversary Mr. & Mrs. Carl Gilbank marriage of their children John & Yvonne Christie. "It wasn't there so we came down Simcoe St. and then turned onto Perry St. and when we got near the township buildings my husband noticed the girl with the pink and white shorts that asked me the time. "When we got closer to her we noticed the bike she was on was mine, and it had my pouch on the handlebars." The girl crossed Queen St. and continued south on Perry St. before turning east on Mary St. by the liquor store. "We were waiting for a car to turn so I hopped out and ran after her. I kept yelling for her to stop -- yelling that she had my bike and to stop -- but no one on the sidewalk or nearby stopped her for me," said the woman. "She ran past the Antrim House and then onto Water St. past Alex Shepherd's office and 1 was running like crazy, but I was getting pretty tired. That's my bike' and I knew she was fighting a losing battle, so I pulled over and asked her if that girl stole her bike," said Mrs. McCrae. "When she said yes she seemed really frustrated, and when no one stopped her she hopped in and we followed the girl." The women checked behind one of the strip malls on the street before spotting the girl on the bike, trying to turn east onto Hwy. 7A. Mrs. McCrae went into the house to call the police, and the owner of the bike waited behind some bushes for the girl to ride by. "She was getting tired and was walking the bike when I jumped out and ran to the edge of the road," said the woman. "I yelled at her that she had my bike, but she said she couldn't hear me and then said it was her brother's bike. "I ran across the road and grabbed the bike and she kept saying it was her brother's bike, but I point- ed out that my pouch was on the handlebars." It was at that point that Mrs. McCrae emerged from the house and came to help once more. "I came out and told her that the cops were on the way so she let go of the bike and kept walking up the road," said Mrs. McCrae. Const. Jim Hunter of the Durham Regional Police showed up shortly. He began a search for the girl, but she was not found. An investigation later led police to the girl, but no charges were filed. "Under the same cir- cumstances, I would do it again, » Mrs. McCrae said. "I realized that she needed help and I was willing to help her retrieve her bike. Everything turned out fine; she got her bike back, and nobody was hurt." Meanwhile, the owner of the bike is thankful for Mrs. McCrae's actions. "I didn't know who she was, but I felt like she was my friend instantly," she said. "She was a real help for me, and she turned it into a little adventure. Generally people are scared to do that sort of thing, but not her, not that time."
