\ 20 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 8, 1999 a "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" CHS band wins silver at Music Fest event By Chris Hall Port Perry Star More than two weeks after Cartwright High School's senior concert band was awarded a sil- ver medal at Music Fest Canada, band leader John Beirness is still grinning. It's not quite the same as the gold medal the small Blackstock school was presented last year, says Mr. Beirness, but it's still a major -- and memorable -- accomplishment for his students. "We lost 12 members from our gold medal- winning band from last year," he said last week. "We lost our trum- pets, clarinets, sax.... we rebuilt a lot of the band from last year, including bringing in seven Grade 9 students." Upon making their way to York University on May 20, the 46 band members found them- selves in front of a panel of adjudicators at 9 p.m. Three pieces and 30 minutes later, they had given a silver perfor- mance.
