According to numbers released by the Returning Office for Durham, a total of 45,761 voters cast their vote in the June 3 provin- cial election. There were 73,244 peo- ple eligible to vote in the 1999 general election. "There was a 62 per cent turnout for the elec- tion.... which is average," said Ralph Werry, return- ing officer for the provin- cial riding of Durham. "It's really quite hard to say how it went, because Durham riding has new boundaries this year. If you compare it to Durham East, and Durham East had an eligible voter list of 62, 205, there was a 63.7 per cent turnout in 1995."
