McClelland Port Perry Star Ward 4 Ceuncillor David Dietlein says Scugog council should not spend money that is not in the current municipal budget, even if the money would be well spent and of benefit to the municipality. He made the comments Monday morning as the parks and recreation committee heard a request for $4,000 from the organizer of a Celebrity Fishing Derby later this month. Councillors were told their investment would help insure that Port Perry and Lake .Scugog get maximum national media exposure from the derby. : Councillor Dietlein, while agreeing that such media exposure for Scugog has merit, said the municipal budget is being put "under fire" as more and more costs are being downloaded onto the municipality. While he voted against the $4,000 request, other committee members felt Scugog can't afford to pass up this chance at nation-wide publicity. They agreed to try to find the money somewhere in the budget if other sources of funds cannot be tapped. The request for the $4,000 came from Karl Kalonka, organizer of a fishing tournament that will bring professional anglers and National Hockey League players to Lake Scugog at the end of June. He said the funds will help insure "very profes- sional" media exposure for the community on But councillors turn down request from local group national TV programs to be aired in the future. Members of the commit- tee were disappointed the request for funds had not come before the township budget was struck last month. But parks and rec chair Ken Carruthers and finance committee = chair Ken Gadsden said the potential economic benefits to the township from national media exposure are too good Dietlein to pass up. "We may never be able to get this kind of public relations again," said Councillor Carruthers. : He agreed to try this week to pry some of the $4,000 from organizations such as the Greater Toronto Marketing Alliance and the Durham Region Economic Development department. The decision to make the funds available came after the committee decided not to provide a grant to the Lake Scugog Regatta Association for its event at Caesarea later this summer. exposure In turning down that request, councillors noted that Scugog is getting out of supporting organiza- tions with annual grants because of budget restraints. '87 Caddy goes up in flames Scugog firefighters were called to the 12th Line last Sunday evening after a car caught fire, say police. Sometime around 9 p.m. on June 13 a man was driving his 1987 Cadillac DeVille on the 12th Line near Old Scugog Rd. in Seagrave when he noticed his dash board lights were flickering, said police. He immediately stopped the car and got out and opened the hood, which caused the engine to catch fire, ~ say police. Firefighters from the Scugog Fire Department were called and extin- guished the fire. The Cadillac was complete- ly destroyed by the fire, police say. NUTRITION PROS, Is Breakfast a Part of your Day? by Lisa St. John, R.D. For many Canadians it isn't. Studies have shown that this can affect performance at both work and school. If eating is difficult when first out of bed or time is limited, think about eating on the way to work or bringing a nutritious snack for morning break.
