' "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 15, 1999 - 5 Revved up for ride Annual Ride for Sight bike run raises funds for critical eye research By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Organizers are expecting another large turnout next weekend, when the third annual Port Perry/Uxbridge Ride For Sight is held. Celebrating its 20th anniversary province-wide this year, the ride raises funds for the RP Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for degener- ative eye diseases that affect more than half a million Canadians. After breakfast at SledHeads and SoftTails (15 Water St.) at 8 a.m. Saturday (June 19) -- a $2 breakfast will be provided, with proceeds going to the ride -- the group will hit the road shortly after 9 a.m. and be on their way to Collingwood. "It's going to be a big event thi year," said local optometrist Dr. Darryl Workman, who is regional chief co-ordi- nator of the event for Central East Ontario. "Riders have the option of going down - into Mississauga to the International Centre for the official kick-off, or they can go directly to Collingwood with us. It's their choice, and they can make it the morning of the ride." Those = who go straight to Collingwood will travel north on Simcoe St. in Port Perry to Argyle Rd, where they will turn west and head to Hwy. 12. From there they will go north on Hwy. 12 to Orillia, gas up, and then take Horseshoe Valley Rd., which joins up with Hwy. 26 and takes them into Stayner, and then to the GNE fair- grounds. The ride is approximately 180 kilo- metres and should take about 90 min- utes, says Dr. Workman, adding that riders must collect at least $50 in pledges to be able to enter the GNE fairgrounds. "It's a really nice ride, and going that way we can meet up with Lindsay rid- ers in Manilla," Dr. Workman said, not- ing that the number of participants is up in the air. "Last year we had about 30 riders, and I don't know how many will be going this year. Weather is the key fac- tor in this; if we have nice weather we could have 50 local riders and if it's not.... well we could get 10," he said. "This is such a great ride. You get out on the road, see a lot of nice bikes and get to help a great cause." Accommodations will be tough to obtain in Collingwood, he warns, but for those staying the night the feature entertainer for the evening will be Sass Jordan. Anyone interested in participating can pick up a donor book at their local motorcycle dealer or shop, or by stop- ping by Dr. Workman's new office on North St. in Port Perry. Darryl Workman, regional coordinator for the annual Ride For Sight, is hop- ing for a good turn-out when the event is held this coming weekend.
