10 - PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 22, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Another good farm forecast Crops off to a great start: OMAFRA rep By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The 1999 growing season is shaping up to be another great one, says one local agriculture official. Neil Moore, a crops specialist with Port Perry's OMAFRA office, said last week that conditions so far this year indicate another very successful season is in the cards for local farmers. "We started off slow again this year, like we did last year, with little rain ini- tially, but we got the crops into the ground a little earlier this time," Mr. Moore said last Friday. "If this holds up, we'll have two back- to-back tremendous years. We have the heat and the timing this year, it's just a matter if we get the moisture we need. We'll just have to wait and see." Last week's rain was more than wel- comed by area farmers and the drop in temperature from the 30s was also applauded, Mr. Moore said. At the moment, though, haying is the subject on most farmers' minds. Winter wheat and spring grains crops are faring well, he added. "Corn crops are very variable right now. Some of them are just barely out of the ground and others are about knee- high," said Mr. Moore. "Crops in general right now are between 10 and 14 days ahead of nor- mal and that is farther ahead than we were last year... as long as things don't turn backwards and we get hit by frost we should be in good shape."
