"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" + Suspects in Borelia assault back in court By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The seven local men charged after allegedly threatening a Port Perry man with a baseball bat will appear in court next week. Staff-Sgt Mike Ewles, a Durham Regional Police officer at Port Perry's 26 Division sta- tion, said last week that the men will make an appearance in an Oshawa court June 29. The men were arrest- ed May 30. It is alleged they went to a Borelia Crescent home wielding a bat, apparently seek- ing vengeance for having been chased out of the neighbourhood the pre- vious day. Police say the con- frontation began the night before, when a car- load of young men who had been breaking bot- tles and making noise were told to leave the Borelia housing complex by a resident. On May 30, around 2:30 p.m., a group of seven men returned with a bat and called for the resident to come outside, said police. The man told his wife to call police, and then went outside. One of the suspects took the bat and came close to the man, attempting to goad him into a confrontation, police say. The rest of the group engaged in a similar threatening manner before leaving the area, police say. At approximately 8 p.m. that evening, offi- cers pulled over a pick- up truck on Old Simcoe Rd. in Port Perry and arrested the driver in connection with the inci- dent. A second suspect -- who was found in a tree -- was arrested at anoth- er address, said police. The five other sus- pects were either appre- hended by police officers or turned themselves in. Charged with uttering threats, assault, crimi- nal harassment, and possession of an offen- sive weapon are William Raymond Zaparanuik, 22; Daniel Petronijevic, 18; James Edward Wells, 21; Stephen Joseph Ball, 20; Craig Douglas Rowntree, 24; Shane Savage, 18; and Casey Michael Vanschagen.
