"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" ---- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 13, 1999 - 3 Pre-trial hearing date to be set next month Security tight as accused officers make appearance By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Security was tight at an Oshawa court last week when the three police offi- cers charged in connection with the shooting death of a Sunderland man made a brief appearance. Durham Regional Police Constable Al Robins, along with York Region Police Constables Randy Martin and Mike: Hoskin, will return to court on Aug. 26, when a date for a pre-trial hearing 1s to be set. All three were charged after the province's Special Investigations Unit judged them to be responsible for the Dec. 28, 1998 shooting death of Tony Romagnuolo, a 44- ~ year-old Sunderland man, and the wounding of his 17-year-old son Rocco. While it ia still unclear what happened the night of the incident, it is alleged that Mr. Romagnuolo was shot and killed by a police officer during an altercation out- side his home. A police officer, Const. Martin, was wounded _in the struggle as well. He sustained a facial wound when his gun went off. As a result of the inci- dent, Durham Const. Robins was charged with aggravated assault and causing bodily harm with intent by discharging a firearm in connection with a gunshot sustained by Rocco Romagnuolo. York Region Const. Randy Martin faces a charge of second degree murder while his partner, Mike Hoskin, is charged with one count of assault with a weapon and one Car backed Into garage Durham Police are looking for information after a vehicle was backed into the corner of a garage near Caesarea. Police report that between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on July 11 a vehi- cle damaged the over- head door and door frame on a garage after it was backed into the northeast corner of €he building. No suspects or vehi- cles were seen in the area, police say. Police were also called to a Blackstock residence last week after a canoe was taken from the property. Between 6:30 p.m. on July 8 and 2 p.m. on July 10 a silver alu- minum Springbok canoe was stolen from ae Donelda Court home. The canoe, valued at "$1,500, was taken from the side of a garage. --eount of careless use of a firearm. Only police supporters, family, friends and finally media were allowed into the court room during the five-minute hearing; the HS Eph RSP LTT public was not permitted to sit in during the officers' appearance.
